Do I really need a 60*

what are the advantages
I have been playing a 60* for 6 months and have found little if any situations that call for it. I use my 56* from 75-10 yards out and use my 56* in sand traps. I use an 8 iron for a bump and run just off the green and occasionally use my hybrid just off the fringe. So there really isn't a need here. Another fact is I just can't hit it.

Should I keep it or let her go???

Do you ever have the situation come up where you need to hit over a green-side bunker and stop the ball quickly on a green? Or various other flop shots? Or how about a full wedge from 60yrds - it's a safe distance.

Β

Those are the times that I use mine. In the end though, it's personal preference. If you need a solid distance club between say 230 yrds and 210 yrds that you can hit everytime, then I'd say drop the club that you really don't use and bolster the rest of your bag with clubs that will help you the most.

If you can't hit it, then I wouldn't bring it to the course. But because it can be such a versatile club, and if it is a weakness in your game, I'd still bring it to the range if I were you. Turn that weakness into a strength.

Β

My dad (~30 hcp) had been struggling with his 60*...he couldn't hit it very well...but he kept using it out on the course. He'd skull a ball over the green about 5 times a round and laugh really loud at himself. Luckily, he left it by a green about a month ago...so no more skulling for now.

Β

I'd been telling him for months, if not years, to stop trying to scoop the ball. He never got it, continued suppinating his left wrist, trying to scoot the clubhead under the ball...until his most recent lesson with a pro. Afterwards, he comes to me on the range and says "well, I need to stop scooping the ball, and hit down and through it."...like it was news to him, like I hadn't been saying that EXACTLY all along. He showed me how to release his hands through impact properly, instead of suppinating his left wrist

Β

For Father's day I bought him a 52* and leant him my copy of Pelz's short game bible. Maybe by the time his birthday comes around (August), he'll be ready to try the 60* again.

When I recently re did my bag, I noticed that for the longest I had done the standard set of a 46 PW, a 56 SW and a 60 wedge. With that I noticed I had a pretty large gap between my SW and PW, so I got a 52 GW and a 58 SW, and I havent looked back, I can do anything with my 58 I could do with my 60, as well as anything I did with my 56,l and my 52 fills the gap nicely

I've gone through three different 60Β° wedges before I found one that I'm in love with.

Β

It's actually a 59Β°, just because Zodia doesn't make a 60. The key is the grind. 80% of the time, I'm laying this club open, whether it be from rough or the sand. That's where the real magic of a lob wedge is.

Β

I could not live without it.

I don't think you necessarily need one just because everyone does. My dad and I are both scratch golfers. I love my 60* and can't imagine not having one in the bag. But has never hit one he likes and doesn't carry one. He feels like having a gap wedge is much more useful.

If you can't hit it...take it out of your bag. It's just taking up space. Replace it with something else until you learn to use...You also may need one with more or less bounce depending on your swing type.

I tried to kick mine out of the bag and go with a 58* to replace both the 56 and 60. That lasted about two weeks. I just love what a 60* can do for you.

I don't think you listed your hdcp, but the average golfer can't effectively use a 60* because 1) his swing in general is pretty horrid and 2) he never practices creative shots with the 60*. Personally, I could not play without it, but then again my game is not that of the average golfer. 48* PW, 54* SW and 60* LW is how I've had my setup since 2000.

Handicap is a 26.8, so I'm lesser than the average golfer. I do hit my 52* and 56* pretty good. Well, I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only guy who can't hit a 60*, in the average golfer category. I'm selling it as of tomorrow. Hello, r7 steel 3 wood.

Β

At a 26, you are a lot closer to the average golfer than you may think:) As far as the 60, the real advantage IMO is the bounce angle. This makes it easier to get under the ball or real tight lies and lets you open it up for a variety of shots. I will agree with the others above though. If you can't hit it, take it out. There are no free rides in my bag:) I don't carry one because I have a low bounce 58. I feel I can hit the same shots I could with the 60 and I am better on half wedges with it.
