Fore_Man

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm down in Myrtle Beach... Just finished up playing the Witch, Wizard and Man O War. I guess that wasn't enough because i Just booked as a single at Oyster Bay tomorrow morning. Wondering if anyone has played in the last couple of weeks and could chime in and let me know what to expect as I haven't played there before. Thanks!

This post will self destruct at midnight lol.

Not only was it in great shape, many of the holes are beauties. Especially on the back 9. The only thing that sucked was the other single that I was paired with. We had a 25 stroke difference at the end of the day.

Good to hear. OB is part of our package at the end of Sept......and the only course of the 6 I haven't played. It's listed in the top 25 on the MBGA site and I've found their ratings to be very fair and accurate.

Glad to...

::begin rant::

We played it as an add-on to our Legends Package on our annual MB trip (2011). We had 24 guys with a 8:00 first tee time.

We go there at 7:30 and somehow our 8:00 am tee time was pushed back to 8:50. They implied we had heard it wrong, we later found out the pro shop put out 20 of their closest friends in front of us... OK. No biggee, then, we started playing...at about 9:15.

The conditions were crap... This was supposed to be a "premium" course. Many of the greens were dead and actually painted green...

wait, I'll say it again.... Many of the greens were dead and actually painted green!

The pace of play was horrific,but the bad part was the roving ranger (which, if you've read my postings, you know I'm fan of good rangers and fast play), anyway the roving ranger said to our lead group (when they bitched) that THEY were the cause of the slow pace.... Meanwhile they had waited (as had my group immediately following) HAD WAITED EVERY SHOT for the 4 groups that the shop put IN OUR TEE TIMES. The cocky ranger implied he would throw us off if they gave him any more (truthful) lip.

So when you do the math..... Ignored Start Times + Bad Conditions + Butthole starters = Bad Experience

(I won't even mention the PITA morning drive from the Legends to the course)

For the record, we had played the course twice before and had none of the above issues. Hopefully your group does not experience them either.

My group has scratched them from our playlist never to return.

::end rant::

Ok, pretty good rant. I would have been on BBB that night with a salty report. IMO, you learned, and now you know one less not to play at Myrtle. I grew up going there every year...to Myrtle...and remember when it first opened. Many more choices now...no need for that BS.

Not that I'm looking to defend the course, just an unbiased recent review here. I was just there (8/20/12)... the staff was great and that includes in the pro shop, the bar as well as starters, rangers and at the bag drop. There was no evidence of the greens being 'painted' either. I've never even heard of that. (Are you sure it wasn't a fertilizer treatment?). The course was in great shape IMO (especially for summer). I'd play it again without hesitation.

also, took me about 25 minutes to get there from NMB and I was staying on Ocean Blvd South just across from Barefoot.

Hopefully Hateto3putt had an unfortunate isolated experience.

I have to agree with Fore_Man. I played OB in May of this year and the conditions were very good. It rained the morning we played, so the course wasn't overcrowded like the other Legends courses. Personally I think OBs biggest problem is being part of the Legends. I was talking to one of the bag guys at Heathland and he was telling me they average about 120,000 rounds a year on each of their courses. The place is a conveyor belt for golf. Great deal on golf and lodging coupled with overbooked, six hour rounds and some of the rudest big mouth golfers in the country. Shame too because all five courses are pretty solid.

It was not my intent to bash the course. Like you, I was giving an unbiased report.

Anyway, I'm sure the conditions and pace of play in August would be quite different than in the height of the winter golf season. Less people and play would probably offer better service. The ranger we encountered was a wiener.

As far as painted greens go..... http://greenresource.testdevsite.com/wp-content/themes/greenresource/uploads/resource_files/resource_golf/Painting%20Dormant%20Bermudagrass%20Putting%20Greens.pdf

In any event, I hope the OP had a good time, I'm glad you folks did as well.

I am the OP and I did have a good time, so no worries there!

Thanks for sharing info on painted greens! That's very interesting. I've never seen that before.

Some of those holes look way less daunting than they do from the back tees. The 17th is like hitting into a sliver of a green from the back.

OB had green issues that they fixed. It is terrible they did those things to you. Unfortunately since i play in MB during the summer i never get big crowds or slow pace of play.

I know i have head many nice things about the course this year, maybe you can try it again one day.

Ha! I saw that same Gator there this summer when we played. I went mid July. Course for the most part was in good shape. It has a few holes with some great views. The bunkers weren't in great shape, but I attribute that more to the rain they got the days before than anything. My only complaint really was pace of play. It wasn't "legendary" slow, as in how long it takes to play the legends courses, but we were waiting between every shot to play.

This is my thing about Myrtle Beach golf, and it seems every course does it. You arrive at the course 45 minutes early, to warm up, hit a few balls, and take advantage of some of the perks included, like breakfast and what not. As soon as you reach the bag drop, however, they are taking your clubs to the cart and saying "okay we are gonna pair you up with this group that's going off now". I don't know why they always want to rush you, because the second you tee off, it's waiting on every shot. But in my mind, If my tee time is at 9, and I choose to get there at 8:15, don't try to force me to play earlier.

Lefty i am like you i show up early. I am one to buy a couple shirts and other things. Get range balls and warm up before my round. I would not like them to push me out early just cause i am there early.

Lucky in the summer when i go i have never run into that at all. This year played True Blue and Man o War had 7:50am tee times at both and go there around 6:30 at both places and neiher wanted to push me out. told them here early to check in shop for shirts and then warm up at range. they were super nice about it. i will watch for that from now on.

Yes it's becoming more and more common to be forced off if you're there on time or early actually. I think what they're doing is trying to keep a steady and consistent flow of golfers off the first tee. I'm not sure that it's totally a bad thing as they're just trying to keep the pace of play somewhat inline. However, What they forget is that we show up early for a reason... SO WE'RE NOT RUSHED! lol.
