Why no wrap grips on Tour?

Title says it all. Seems like most Tour players use rubber or cord grips, with a handful of Gripmaster. Very few that I know of play wraps. Any ideas? Is it just that they're used to rubber or cord grips, or is there something inherently inferior about wrap graps for high SS players? I searched the forums but couldn't find anything.

Not popular with the young guys for some reason, but Jack Nicklaus used wrap grips his whole career. I think thats a good enough reference for me!

Jack also used "woods" made out of wood. That doesn't mean that he wouldn't have been using the new technology available today.

Jack used leather...REAL leather, grips his entire career, he may have switched to rubber wrapped grips later in life because real leather was not readily available. IMO most rubber "wrap" grips are horrible, they are slippery and have zero gripping power as compared to cord or more modern patterns that are scientifically designed. Wrapped only worked with a material like leather that has natural gripping powers, hence the pros rarely play them.

In the 25-35 year old generation three grips reigned supreme growing up.

1. Gp tour velvet
2. Gp tour velvet cord
3. Lamkin crossline (and crossline cord)

Obviously people aren't straying too far from what they are used to.

Don't forget the Golf Pride Tour Wrap. I'd throw in the Golf Pride Victory for people closer to my age of 38. We released the Tour Wrap in 1991 and the Tour Velvet in 1995. Both were monsters right out of the gate. A few of the olders guys around the office still tell the story of when the chemists called Sales and Marketing back to the lab because they had developed a new compound that felt outstanding. A soon as they felt it, they knew they had something big. The rest, as they say, is history. Bruce

Yeah, I'd agree it has more to do with what has been more commonly available on OEM clubs than the design of wrap grips. Seems that people are just used to smooth or multicompound grips these days.

I played for many years using the Danny Edwards Royal grips and then switched to GP Tour Wrap Full Cords and still use those for the most part. I always liked the way the wraps fit in my hands. The newer non-cord Tour Wraps feel pretty nice too and I'd play those in a heartbeat if I didn't still have a small stash of my cords.

Tour players are .paid money to be seen using or wearing all kinds of equipment!
There aren't many companies selling leather wrapped grips. Those that are understandably get high prices for their product. This creates a limited market.
Therefore it would most likely be a waste of ad money to pay a player the fees required!

I have played Golf Pride Tour Wraps for so long, nothing else feels quite right to me. I actually hate any kind of "rubbery feeling" grip, so I was sad when GP announced the orignal Tour Wraps would be replaced with a new "improved" version. After takinga close look at those, I decided the Lamkin Perma Wraps or the Tacki-macs would likely be preferable over the new Version-2 Tour Wraps.

Fortunately I had the good sense to stock up on original Tour Wraps as soon as I heard Golf Pride would no longer be making them. I picked up about 3 dozen or so in both .580 and .600, which should last me for awhile.

Feel is so important in golf, and having a grip that you feel comfortable with is such a key component for good feel. Wish GP would bring back the original Tour Wrap design.

The start of the end for leather grips came when President Eisenhower started playing with rubber grips. They were made by Eaton Rubber Co. a producer of rubber fan belts.

Blame it on President Dwight Eisenhower who started playing rubber grips - new invention from Eaton Rubber Company a producer of fanbelts.. The rubber grips caught on and Eaton named their division Golf Pride.
Soon a leather grip producer called Lamkin started to produce rubber grips to compete.

The skill to install and wrap a leather grip using a cardboard, form a leather wrap, a mouth cap and a butt cap was surpassed by the simple installation of a less costly rubber grip.

i loved the Neuman calf Kingwood leather wrap grips -- i can still smell them -- like a new ball glove just awesome -- they wraped over an underisting -- then we glued the grip co;;ar over the leather -- there was not a big groove on the wrap like there are with the rubber wraps actually in order to get a groove we used to wet the grip up and then with the stem of the scrediver mold the grooves on the seams --- stll havent found a grip that could match that feel ---ah those were the days

I would pay serious money if Lamkin would reproduce their undrelistings for irons and putters. The LLRC underlistings I use feel perfect and I grab every one that I can find.
