Review of TaylorMade Burner Hybrid

I got one at a new PGA Tour Superstore in Dallas area (large store, but some people who work there are clueless... that's another story for a different day). The TM Burner Rescue is an absolute rocket launcher. It gets ball up in the air VERY easily (so those of you looking for a new hybrid, make sure to try this one... I have had almost all of them, from the original Rescue Mid, Rescue Dual, Ping G5, Callaway FT-hybrid, Titleist 585h, Nike CPR and Slingshot, and lastly I was playing Bobby Jones Hybrid which is also EXCELLENT) but the TM Burner beats them all in terms of forgiveness. The ball flight has DRAW tendency, which will fit those who fight slice... It also plays a bit between a fairway wood and a long iron (while the Bobby Jones is really like a long iron), but you can hit the Burner either way and still gets the ball up in the air... distance is surprisingly good, a few yards within the Rescue Dual and Bobby Jones. The head is a medium size, not too small, but not overly big either so you can still punch out from the trees/roughs and can still chip with it. If you like smaller head, try the G5 which is also great hybrid!

For what it's worth... try it to see if you like.

The shallow face, in my opinion, really helps getting the ball up in the air easily from any lies... it was actually helping me a lot from the faiways - I did not even have to pull my 5 wood R7 St off the bag. As I said, this hybrid plays in between long iron and FW, so it is versatile in that regards.

I tried punching it off the rough and it worked like a charm... no difference with the Rescue Dual in terms of versatility on funny lies, roughs, tree roots etc (we have those in Dallas :-)). It does have a slightly bigger head, which may not fit some people's eyes, but it plays "smaller" than the head size. The head size is about the same size as Bobby Jones hybrid (it looks bigger, but put them side by side and you see, they are almost identical except Bobby Jones is shaped like potato).

Moecat, the RE-AX superfast is stable and consistent... I think the S flex of the RE-AX Burner hybrid shaft AND the FW plays with a bit mid-to-softer tip, yet not too soft to balloon the ball. It is not boardy at all, you feel in control all the time... that's why it's forgiving and can launch the ball easily (I am amazed.. TM must have tweaked the shaft a bit, because in the past, I did not like the RE-AX on R7 425). This one (and the one in my Superquad) feel "alive and in control", dispersion is very good. I hit the Burner Hybrid consistently in the middle with slight draw. If u like to swing easy, but not "going for it / killing it", and as you know my swing type is more of a sweeper not a hittter, you will like the shaft. It also is not too heavy, I prefer 65-75 grams in my FW and Hybrids anyway.

Hope this helps...

One other question before I pull the trigger on one of these. Since you have the r7 steel 5 wood, as I do, how does the burner 19* hybrid compare with trajectory and distance? Do you think you will carry both?

Very good question :-) As moecat said, the hybrid normally has less distance than my 5 wood, and that is also valid for me... BUT... sometimes they are both are about the same distance (especially off the tee). I just use them for different purposes in normal situation - 5 wood for Fairway and off tee, and hybrid for rough and troubled situation. In the Burner Hybrid case, it plays very well from the fairway too... My other hybrids play more like a long iron, but this one is semi in between (both types of swings, a wood-type and iron-type swings will give you good result with the Burner).

Trajectory wise, the R7 Steel is higher for me. I hit my hybrid like a stinger type, so it is more flat and boring trajectory. The R7 St is very nice off the tee though, for those dog legs left and right.

  • 5 years later...

I still have my old trusy 24/5, 19 degree 2007 burner hybrids. Love them. Ball screams with slight draw which I need with the longer clubs.

Anyone know if they made a 16/15 degree 2007 burner hybrid. Can't find them. I just can't hit 3woods for what ever reason. Tried many shafts. The shorter lengths are easier in the hybrids.

I found some 15/16 in the rescue 11 but didn't like the head. I would love to get the same exact head just in 16 degrees. I would be set.

Any adive. Thanks.
