Really Impressed w/ Top-Flite Gamer

Picked up a couple dozen when GG ran a BOGO Free promo a week or two ago based on what I've read on here and other places. I only started playing 2 years ago and pretty much all the guys I play w/ pretty much throw them away when found on the course. After playing today in high 50s/low 60s weather this might be my ball for the upcoming season. I've played the e6, qstar, zstar, over the last 2 years and really liked the way the ball played today. It felt good off the irons and driver and checked fairly well on chips and pitches, It even felt pretty good off the putter. I want to thank you guys for bringing this ball in play for me as without this website I would have never played a Top-Flite.

Welcome to the club. :drinks:

I have not used the latest Dicks version, but have plenty of course time on all the older versions. Seek some older ones out if you can. Ebay has them for .50 a ball at times as they just ignorantly get thrown into bulk with other TF balls. The original Gamer has the most spin. My personal favorite though are the Black Box V2 ("Gamer V2" on the ball with one pointer next it). If I could I would go back in time and load up on those ones (I never tried that version when widely available because at the time it was considered inferior to the older Green Box V2's) I would get enough for a LONG time for me.

Anyway, enjoy the stigma of knowing you are using a GREAT performing ball at a great bargain, despite the snickers and odd looks from playing partners when they ask what ball you playing..

I used the Gamer Tour for most of the season along with RBZ U, and the "GT" is a great ball. I went from NXT Tour to the Gamer V2 and then tried the urethene Gamer Tour and it was great. Long off the driver and excellent spin around the green for $2/ball was a great addition for the golfing world.

Those that still think of "Rock Flite" are ignoring the last 15+ years when Top-Flite had the Strata ball series and tour wins under its belt. Callaway no doubt absorbed much of the Strata technology when they purchased Top-Flite and had a great offering with the original Gamer and V2. Now that DSG owns Top-Flite and Maxfli I have to hope that the R&D continues as we have seen with the Maxfli U series this past season. I am anxiously awaiting the announcement of the 2014 offerings from several manufacturers including TM.

+1. The "rock flite" comment is pure ignorance when referring to the modern day top flite; but it is relevant in terms of the TF image, some will always think this way and never give it a chance. Too bad really, but it shows how important image is. I've never played a TF ball that was a rock, so I've never understood the "rock flite" comment. This includes the Top Flite Tour, TF Strata tour soft, and many of the Strat series during that era, TF XL 3000, 5000 series, D2 series, Gamer, Gamer v2, current Gamer, Gamer Tour. If any thing I'd like them to firm their offerings up more, I think they are actually a bit too soft. Current Gamer and Gamer Tour are nice additions to the line and I have not been disappointed in either. I prefer the Gamer Tour over the Gamer due to better behavior around the greens, and for it was a bit longer off the tee. Between the Maxfli U4 and U4x and the Gamer Tour I'm stocked up for next year.

I've got some Gamers and in comparison to something like the e6, I agree they are a fine ball.
But in comparison to the Chrome, Chrome+, Z Star, Lethal or TP5, I felt they were not nearly as good for shots into the green.
I'm at 82-ish SS/6I and feel those other balls behave much better in regards to expected amounts of spin on the greens.

Always good to see someone take a punt on something different and find that it works for them though :)

if you're playing the standard gamer then comparisons against "Chrome, Chrome+, Z Star, Lethal or TP5" is apples and oranges due to the cover. but if you jump up to the gamer tour, i think you'll find the same greenside manners given it's a urethane ball being compared against those you mentioned

Interesting. Thanks for the additional info. For kicks I might just give it a try.

If you are looking for a ball that plays like the Green Box V2, you can grab up a bunch of Callaway HX Diablo Tours. Still plenty left.

Some people couldn't even swallow their pride and try a Top-Flight out.

I play this ball all the time. I just love that people assume you are a hack on the 1st tee when you show them what ball you are playing. Honestly, the V2 is the best all around ball I have played.

Since I've only played it in high 50s weather, can any of you that play it year round tell me how it plays in the summer with the higher temps. I know some balls play much better in the winter and not so well in the summer.
It is a great ball in warmer weather too. Doesn't get mooshy or anything. In fact, one of the biggest drives I have ever had was with the older Gamer V2 in about 95 degrees of heat. Very easy to compress and stays on line very well.

Seems like there have been threads dissing the Gamer after Dick's took over. Also the Gamers did not fare well in the 2013 Golf Digest spin test (lowest wedge spin of all balls tested), but had done okay in earlier pre-Dicks years.

This thread is an opposite PoV from almost every Gamer thread and post since the take over. I surmise that:
- Either people really into the previous TF Gamer made by Cally may have been a bit too jaundiced to give the new one a shot.
- Or these are players that were not on the old Gamer as much and are arriving to a good ball at a value price.
- Or there is little value in ball reviews because the variables are myriad. Wait until a critical mass of 30 0r so opinions chime in.

 • 4 weeks later...

I have tried many balls in the lower to mid price range, and I keep coming back to the Gamer. I have played, and still have some Gamer V2, and I don't find a difference between them and the new Dick's Gamer.

I have played Nike PD Soft, Srixon Q Star, Nike Vapor Black, and several others I have found on out on the course. The Gamer stays in my bag unlike any other ball. The Srixon Q Star is a great ball off the tee and flies straight, but won't hold the green for me on approach and pitch shots. I really like the Nike Vapor Black. It's long off the tee, and plays really well, but for price and performance, the Gamer is just too hard to beat IMO.
