Trip to Gainesville in February

I am going down to Gainesville,FL on a trip and was looking for a place to play a round or two on the way. I live in Alabama and play the RTJ courses in Birmingham all the time, but I haven't played Capitol Hill(Montgomery) or Cambrian Ridge(Greenville) yet. Those two are options, but I wanted to play something that i couldn't take a weekend trip to and play. If you have any suggestions feel free to voice your opinion. We will be going through Montgomery, Dothan, and Tallahassee!

Hail Plantation is a decent course but I can't remember if it is private.

First off, as a Nole who lives in Tallahassee, I'm sorry you have to go to Gainesville.

However, Haile is decent. I've played it several times when my buddy was a member there. As of two years ago, it was private. I don't know now. I bet you could call and get on.

However, if you drive an extra 40 minutes south to Ocala there are a ton of options and the course are much, much better.

Black Diamond is a private course but you can get on. Just call and ask and play the Quarry course. I promise you it will be worth the extra drive time and the cost. It is one of those courses that will be memorable.

Gainesville native's 2 cents. Haile Plantation & Gainesville CC are the 2 best, however private. The U.F. (Mark Bostic) course is a nice track, just put new Greens in, however you must play with an affiliated person (member or alumni). We walk this course quite a bit after 3pm for $15. . Ironwood & Meadowbrook are serviceable at best, and should only be played if you can get a $15 or lower rate off Golfnow. Do yourself a favor and drive south about 30 minutes to Ocala. Juliette Falls, Stone Creek, Candler Hills, or Ocala National are all great tracks. Juliette Falls is my #1 though.

The reason I'm going is to watch a tournament at the U.F. Course that's on campus. I'm gonna head down to Ocala because it seems like I'll get my money's worth.

Most all of the courses I mentioned are on Golfnow. Juliette is by far the best. Probably a 50 minute drive from I75/ Gainesville. Stone Creek, Candler Hills, & Ocala National are about a 35 minute drive are so. Play Ocala National from the tips if you want to test yourself. If you want to drive North, the closest is Eagle Landing, Jacksonville, 50 minute drive. There is a lighted par 60 course, Westend, just west of Gville, 10-15 minutes. $17 off Golfnow. They stay open till about 10 PM., and you must tee off before 7:30 or so. Greens are good, tee boxes and fairways are not the best. We normally play there as a practice round instead of hitting range balls.
