Miura vs. Epon

Try both -- there is no better -- it's only what fits you.

In general, I've found Epons to have more technology and forgiveness in the iron lines. I hit an Epon blade for giggles the other day with a Nippon shaft -- I was surprised -- thought it would be slightly clicky -- but it was not. It felt solid and soft.

At the same time, if you're paying this much for a club, I would have slight sole modifications made to fit your swing and conditions. Most custom fitters will order them with modifications.

Epons because of their forgiveness and their technology, along with customization and everything. It seems to me that my Epon 301s are softer feeling and are muted more (not really clicky) than the Miuras. With the Miura blades they are soft but also solid (not too soft, but not to clicky). This makes sense also because I believe the Epons are forged with 1020 carbon steel and the Miura's are forged with 1025 carbon steel. I may be mistaken let me check!

From the website:

AF Tour -- Epon created a special die which creates a slight cavity and changes the volume of steel on the upper and lower part of the blade. This places the CG at the 100% apt/center point on the blade creating a perfectly balanced iron, unlike more traditional irons where the CG is towards the heel. The groove in the back of the blade helps define the seperation between upper and lower weighting and also contributes to the AF-Tour's overall balance. This balance creates optimal trajectory and a large sweet area. Playbility and feel are the AF-Tour's strongest suits with a touch of forgiveness added in. Pure control for the professional level player but still forgiving enough for the low to even mid handicapper who wants a challenge.

Epon, 701 to be exact, kind of like that clicky feeling, but then again, my opinion is biased, haven't hit a Miura before.

That makes sense since the 701 has a very thin "as-roll" stainless steel face, which is probably a different alloy and made in a different way than Miuras or other Epons.

Having hit the 701, it is different than the 501, which are different than the Blades. The Miuras 202 and 301 feel different (muted/softer) than the 701 and 501. I haven't hit the 301. One is not better than the other - it depends on the feel you enjoy in a head/shaft combo and what technology you want in the iron design.

I hit them both today (miura blade and af tour) and Tour was much easier to hit. They both felt great and very solid but the tour just felt better all around. My misses were much better with the epons and solid square hits seemed to go a little further.

The price is much different as well. The Tours were approximately 400-500 more for a full build.

If price is not an issue, go with the Epons!

You sure on the price??? Surprised there is that big of a difference in price and it's the Epons that cost more!!

I think it all depends on who is quoting the price.

well, I was quoted a price for SST PUREing and MOI Match. I dont want spine aligned or Flo. I want "EXACTLY" what I hit at the store. The feel was absolutely incredible. Also, since they had the irons, allowed me to try them out, answered all my questions and then some, i'd rather give them my business than some guy that's a couple hundred dollars cheaper. Without having the opportunity to try them, I would have never known how sweet they really are.

I crossed referenced the price that I was quoted with Tour Spec Golf and it's about right. I dont mind paying more for great service and after sales support. That goes a long way in my book. I know the shop has an incredible reputation and i've seen their work first hand. That's who I want building my sticks. Im very anal with fit and finish and i've seen custom work done by many high-end shops and maybe im just too anal but the fit and finish was not that great. If anything happens to my clubs, I want to be sure i will be taken care of without having to ship my clubs some where across america. Some shop for price (nothing wrong with that), but I shop for the total package (customer service, knowledge, expertise, skill, technology, etc.) and I know that comes at a price and Im ok with that.

Im still not 100% sure what i am going to do, but I cant get these clubs out of my mind.

EPON AF-Tours, in my subjective opinion. I demo'ed the MIURA blade back-to-back against the EPON AF-Tour every night after work for an entire week.

Everyone has different preferences in terms of feel/looks/sound/etc. I intentionally hit shots off the toe and heel of both clubs to test forgiveness. My impressions were that the MIURAs seemed slightly less forgiving compared to the MIURAs.

In terms of feel, they both deliver incredible feedback, the best forgings I've ever hit. I agree with others on this post that the MIURAs seem more soft/muted vs. the EPONs which are crisper. I say you owe it to yourself to extensively hit both as they cost more than your average set of sticks.
