I sat and had a chat with one of my good pals after golf today and decided that it probably is my own fault because I see things in an idealistic way and tend to look back to how things were rather than the actuality of golf club members as they are.

One of the massive and detrimental changes in my view is that so many courses are desperate for members that they forgo the old tradition of having a proposer and seconder for new members.

They were guarantors for the both the good character and behaviour of a proposed new member and usually took them under their respective wings to educate them in etiquette and acceptable behaviour.

Now it's just a question of grabbing the money in exchange for a membership tag.

Bobby Jones was still an iconic figure when I began playing golf, later it was Jack Nicklaus who was admirable for so many traits not least of which was his total respect for the game and its traditions.

That has all gone:the professional game has impacted on the amateur game in a negative way and society in general is in a poor state.

Women are amazed when I stand and hold a door open for them,I always say please and thank you,I stand aside and wait for a doorway to clear rather than shove my way through,so all things considered, yes it's me but I would sooner be who I am than the riff-raff I seem to encounter.

I think it is you. As in you're now noticing and expecting more than you did in the past. These things have always been there. This isn't a slam, this is a level of awareness. As a kid I remember the club pro dealing with all these same issues. As a club pro, I dealt with all these same issues. As an experienced golfer, I see all these same issues. But I also see folks doing it right. I also see kids learning properly. I also see etiquette being respected. I firmly believe that one will find what they're looking for...

I've heard this theory before, and I want to believe its true, but I'm not sure I can. As a relatively young man (35), I should be oblivious to much of whats been stated in this thread, but I'm not. I often tell my Dad that I wish I had grown up in his era. It just seems like every measurable aspect of life was both simpler and better. Cars were longer, more stylish, and rode better; golf was an art form, not a long driving contest; we made things in this country besides porn, and an honest job and wage was much easier to obtain; but the biggest thing, the biggest thing is people had to interact with one another in daily society. There was a sense of dignity and decency.

For the record: I play golf absolutely by the rules with no mulligans, practice shots, or gimmies every time with no exceptions. I look at etiquette and pace of play as a point of pride, and I use older KZG blades and 8 year old Taylor made woods. Oh...and I drive a Lincoln Town Car :)

I'd like to raise a proverbial glass to you gentleman. The proper way hasn't been lost on all of us youth.

No offense OP, but I read your posts and see someone who only sees the bad side of everything. There isn't a single mention of anything you like (much less love) about the game of golf. Instead it is just a litany of complaints about the things others do wrong. It sounds like it may be time for you to leave the game and find some passion in something you can view in a positive light.

I quote you, I look at etiquette and pace of play as a point of pride.

I also see no point in getting mad for a bad shot or round

I'm 27 but playing golf since I was 10 for 17 years..

I don't know if teenager memories are already being altered from time but I feel like in early 2000's players were more respectful for the course and other people.

long story short: I've started to play practice rounds by my self too..

All I'll add here is that I stoically play by the rules but on literally one or two occasions that I can recall, I have legitimately forgotten a stroke I played when reporting my score to the person keeping the card.

When it happens with any kind of regularity, then you have a cheater but I don't hang a bloke who forgets once.

There is something to be said for embracing nostalgia in golf, & in life, in contrast to blindly accepting that technology solves everything. Technology has it’s place, but so does art, grace, thoughtfulness, courtesy, kindness, and contentment.

I believe a slavish devotion to technology has brought on a lot of the perceived problems we witness in many arenas of life. People like me gravitate toward nostalgia to help cope with the cognitive dissonance that our modern world creates. We want to show younger people that the world of our youth wasn’t so bad, so offensive, so primitive as perhaps they were taught. There was grace. There was art. There was a game where nature and man cooperated in something that was beautiful. Before big money ruined the Olympics, for example, a bunch of kids beat the pros at their own game.

For some of us manners matter. Of course, my opinion fwiw.
