Ordering a new driver ? When you ask it be say 1/2 inch short of standard

If I were ordering a new driver from say Ping, if I wanted it shorter than standard, would I need to tell them to tip the shaft? Do they do a standard tipping regardless? How would I know what to tell them? How do I know if I even need it tipped?

 

I apologize for the ignorance. I've thought often of shortening the shaft a touch on my next driver purchase but never knew what to do to ensure it is correct.

I did it with mine. Bought from a normal golf shop but you specify how long you want it to be and then Ping will sort out the length and swingweight for you on your order.

 

Mine is 44.5” so an inch or so shorter than off-the-shelf. My distance on average has increased as I hit the sweet spot more regularly.

 

I very much doubt I’ll ever go for a full length ever again, much more manageable to me, albeit I’m only 5’10”, so the shorter length suits me far more. Many pros play a shorter length like this.

Let's clarify terms before you make the order. If you **tip a shaft**, this means you trim the shaft at the small end where it goes into the hosel/adaptor. This will increase the stiffness of the shaft, because the trim is made at the flexible end.

 

If you want to just shorten the shaft, ask for a **butt trim**. This comes as the butt end before the grip goes on. Although a butt-trim does stiffen the shaft _slightly_, a half-inch butt-trim would not be noticeable to feel.

 

Be Aware that shortening the shaft a half-inch will lower the swingweight by 3 points. You can recapture this by adding 6 grams of weight to the head (G400-series weight port). As for G410-series drivers, I haven't hit one and don't know if the sliding head weight can be swapped out for a heavier one. _Anyone know?_

 

As for "knowing what to do..." go for a fitting. Most golf shops have a policy that if you buy a new driver through them, they will fit you for free and order it from the factory for you. A skilled fitter can discuss with you different ways to recapture the swingweight if you shorten the shaft.

If you request it short, OEMs will butt-cut to length. Extra tipping is a different request. If you just asked for 1/2" extra tipping, it would still come at the same stock playing length

If i were ordering, I would stay away from words like "standard", because it differs from one manufacturer to another.

 

Give them specifically what you want, ie length, tipping instructions, swingweight, etc.

Thanks for responses. So, if “standard” length is 45.75”, and I want it at 45”, they will bring the swing weight back up to D3 or I have to ask for this to be done? Is this done with hot melt through ping? I wouldn’t want to have to apply lead tape to a $550 driver.

No. Unless u want it to play stiffer the shaft does not need to be tipped. However.... If u want it to play shorter you would order it -.5 or whatever you want it to be and the com p any will usually add the weight back to the head via hot melt or heavier sole weights or tip weight. If u want to shorten the clu on your own you will want to cut frim the butt end and either add lead tape or a heavier sole weight to keep your swingweight from dropping too low! If you are DIY then cut it, see how u hit it with 0 weight added and adjust as needed. A role of lead tape os bennificial until you have a comfortable # and then u can hot melt or order a heavier sole weight.
