Possible Grip Buildup tape issue?

Hey guys. Just regripped my clubs and I used masking tape to build up the bottom some to remove the taper since the grips I got this time were standard taper. 5 layers total on the bottom tapering up to 1 layer.

 

I did this 2 days ago and let them sit 24 hours without touching them. Brought my clubs to work and left them in the trunk (100+ Degree Texas Weather) and when I went to the range today I noticed some of the clubs the grips are now a little lopsided for lack of a better word. They’re not fully circular all the way down. It’s almost as if being in the bag flattened some of them out.

 

Has this ever happened to you guys at all? Seems odd to me that they would do that as I left plenty of time for everything to dry and I’m not sure what would make them do that.

 

Is it the heat? Masking tape slipping around? Could the grips have just softened up in the heat and then molded together? Really weird. And I’d love some tips to fix as I’d rather not buy a whole new set of grips.

THe tape layers needs to be wrapped tightly each and every time, can't put it up like you do with the with the one layer of double sided stape.

I like to spirl wrap the tapes after the first layer because I could put a little bit more pressure applying the tape.

Apply one final layer after you are done with the thickness built up. This is to tie every layer together. There are a few videos on the internet which you could get some tips from. A couple are from tour van so I'm sure their method is tested.

It it looks shaky and cushy before you put the grip on, then it'll be just that, shaky and subject to deformation.

Because of the built up layers, it'll have some degree of "pressed down" but it shouldn't be too much to notice. It is 5-6 layers of tape and not a solid surface. It'll be as solid as you built it.

Is it kinda flat on the sides of the grip on the seams? They can flatten out slightly on the sides if they are overstretched. I’ve gotten pretty used to that feel and really like it but it’s a little different at first. I think that’s what you are describing and being that I’ve built mine up about that same amount for 25 years it’s pretty normal with some grip styles. They don’t “hide” the stretch as well

You know, I’m starting to think this might be it. I bought Lamkin UTX and it seems like it’s on the sides where it feels a little flatter. The sides that feel flat even have less cord in them too and seem to be more rubber. I wonder if the feel is playing tricks on me

They are stretched out on the seams. I have utx as well and that’s exactly what it is. It’s not an issue and they will round out a little in a few days. They are totally solid and you won’t notice after you get used to it. At 4-5 extra wraps in the lower hand you will start to see this happen with some grips. I only have 3 extra on my driver and it’s very minimal. I have 4 extra on my irons and they are just like you described

I will say this is my first time with the UTX and I love them so far. It’s hot as hell in Texas and I’ve always avoided cord because they’re so rough. UTX seem to be a good in between with some tack and not being to hard on hands/gloves.

They are a fantastic grip...you’ll enjoy them in the sultry weather down there

All that tape is going to stretch the grips. They're not completely uniform 360º around, so the stretch isn't going to be uniform either, at least not initially.
