Miyazaki Jinsoku iron shaft trimming instructions.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys; I posted this under "Equipment" but it appears that my question is a better fit for this part of the forum. I found some Miyazaki Jinsoku iron shafts on RBG and was wanting to know if anyone has any idea what the trimming instructions are? I emailed RBG and they replied that the shafts do not come with the instructions. I've also scoured the net and have come up empty. These shafts were, I believe, exclusively used in Srixon and Cleveland clubs. The shafts are Regular flex, 39" long and are .370 parallel tip ( I don't know how long the tip is). Any suggestions would be appreciated. I might buy some and just mess around with different trims to see what happens. A little hard stepping to a Firm flex is what I am looking for anyway.

Thanks.

raggal62,

RBG put the Kuala 7 shafts on sale at $1.59 each so I bought a bunch of them ( the Jinsuko's were down to $4.99 I think). Are they, the Kuala's, 1/4 increments? I don't have them yet so I don't know the tip length. Also, they state "for Utility" on the shaft so they were made for the srixon utility irons. Do you think they could be trimmed for a regular iron set? I can always just send them back, but at 1.59 each I thought it was worth the risk of getting them in the event they could be trimmed for a 4-P set. I'll email Srixon again and ask as well.

No experience with the Kaula line, but not much to lose at that price. Please post results if you decide to experiment.

I got my shipment of Kaula & Jinsoku shafts. The Kaula's are .370", but have "for Utility" printed on them. The parallel section is 4" long, so I guess it could be used for a smaller set of irons, but I suspect the graphics might be too far up the shaft and go under the grip. I did a quick visual, and it looks like a 0" tipped 4 iron at 38.5" would just barely have the "Miyazaki" logo outside of the grip, so if you are careful it could work.

Just thinking out loud here....I'd guess you couldn't tip them more than 2.5" and still have enough .370 for proper insertion. So you could tip in 0.5" increments and still get 6 irons.

The Jinsoku's have a 6" parallel tip section, so those are definitely iron shafts.

Yes based on 1.5" insertion depth, 2.5" would be max. Good luck with your experiment. Please post results with Kaula's.

I pulled the trigger on 8 Jinsoku's. Plan to install in 5-PW, AW, SW. In an attempt to achieve a soft regular, no tip trim for 5 iron. 1/2" increments from there.

Can't seem to find specs on either the Kaula or Jinsoku. Looks like the Kaula have s stiffer tip. Any idea on the weight of these?

Thanks for the quick response. Looks like I'll give the Jinsoku a shot.

Would love to hear feedback once anyone gets their Jinsoku's installed. I'm going to be putting mine in my z565's and am thinking I'll go 1/2" over in Hope's of maintaining swingweight. Specifically I'm looking for feedback on how you guys feel these play to flex as I might soft-step once if that is the collective opinion. Since this will be my 1st DIY iron install am I correct in the thinking that if I do decide to soft step I should just start the tipping in 1/2" increments at the 6 iron rather than the 5 iron?

One more quick ?. Looks like my irons are .355 hosel. RBG says the shafts are .370 but doing a little research tells me that these shafts in the Srixon z355 irons are.362. Has anyone actually measured them to confirm the .370 size? Looks like I will doing some sanding at any rate. Final question is what size ferrules should I use and do they need to be collared?

Yes, I have measured both from RBG and posted results earlier in this thread. Jinsokus are .370" with ~6" of parallel tip section. Kaula utility are .370" with maybe 4" parallel tip.

You'll need a .370" ID ferrule. The OD size depends on the iron hosel size - whatever fits best. Collared ferrules only if the iron hosel has a cutout for them.

I installed the "R" flex Jinsoku's in a set of KZG forged cavities 5-PW. I really stocked up on the shafts at the ridiculously low price at RBG. Soft stepped +1 in an attempt to achieve a soft regular @ 1/2" over. No tip trim for the 5 iron, 1/2" increments down from there. With a 50 gram grip the SW came out at D5, but I think the KZG heads are a little heavier than normal.

I've only had a chance to hit the 8 iron a few times. Been having some hamstring issues. I was pleased with the results with the limited trial however. The shaft has the smoothness of the other Miyazaki iron shafts I've tried along with a mid high launch. The flat line profile of this shaft fits my swing style, more of a swinger than a hitter. Once I heal up I'll give them a more robust test, but I feel encouraged. Especially given the investment!

Yes the shafts are a tad smaller in diameter than .370. I didn't feel a need to shim the .370 bore although others might. I also used .370 ferrules which were a little loose but an extra dab of epoxy should be sufficient. Didn't need collars on my KZG's. I would think with the right amount of sanding/filing you should be golden in your .355 bore.

Were your KZG steel before and did you use the same length? Also if your KZG were steel what was the weight of those shafts?

So if I've got it correct, you built them at the same length as they were with the rifles and the switch came out identical even with the 44 gram drop in shaft weight?

I actually ordered another set. I'm going to drop the 1st set in some Hogan bh5 and if I like them then I'll do my Srixon z565s. Thank you for all the info,. Its been a big help.

Thought I'd post these here. While I've done my own grips for 30+ years this was my 1st attempt at a complete iron build. Ben Hogan Bh5 with Miyazaki Jinsoku Stiff, soft stepped once, Iomic 2.3 Stickys. Golfwrx was invaluable to me during this build as I seemed to encounter problems at almost every stage. These forums provided a myriad of solutions to every hurdle; from stuck tip weights, shaving. 370 shafts to fit .355 hosels, stubborn ferrule installation, swing weight issues, etc. They came out at D2 based off a 38" 6I and 4 gr tip weights added to each club. I've got another set of these shafts so I might install them in my Srixon z565; just want to make sure I really like these shafts before I do. qavib4frcxh5.jpg

Yep...they work great. An absolute steal for the price and it was fun doing my 1st complete build. Over 10 rounds with them and nothing has come apart so all in all a success.

They feel light, as I expected. Ball flight tends to be mid, they don't seem to balloon even on very aggressive swings. They are tougher to hit real low on purpose; they want to get up a bit no matter how hard I try to keep it down. Spin is spot on. They are good for this old guy in the winter that's for sure.
