New driver advice/options?

Moving on from the R7...

Hi all,

I've been playing an R7 quad for about 18 months now, but seeing all the new models coming out I've decided to move on to something else, added to that I'm not totally convinced about movable weight technology, I've had it set up for a low fade and you can still hit a high draw... it's much more about good fundamentals, and a repeatable swing, not screwing a whole bunch of weight in the heel and expecting it to fix my occasional :cheesy: banana slice.

The current R7 is a 9.5 with a stiff 757, my swing speed is in the area of 95-105 and my bad shot is a blocked or sliced ball out to the right... I tend to launch the ball high as well.

List of contenders:

R7 460, yeh, I know what i said about the weights, but from what I've read it's long and forgiving, just what I'm after.

NVG2, I have a mactec 5 wood with a Vista tour shaft in it, really like it.

Cleveland Comp 460, hit a demo Ti460 the other day, very nice solid feel, nicely matched shaft and head.

There the top 3 I suppose, any others I should consider? Living in Hobart, Tasmania I don't often get the chance to hit clubs first hand and you can only get so much from the advertising blurb...

I'm keen to try a Bimatrix or a comp NT in the new driver, would either of these be a good match to any of the heads?

If you block or slice the ball, then the 460cc heads may make it worse. I'd have a look at the Cobra F Speed as well. I also think the R7 425 is a nice compromise between the original R7 and the R7 460.

You might want to have a look at the Bridgestone J33R. It's 420cc's which a bit bigger than the Quad, and not 460 CC's that will make your "blocking" worse.

Yeh, I had a look at the cobras, new one out BTW! the HS9, have not seen one "down here" so all I've got to go on is reviews, may come into contention...

There is a Bridgestone rep here so I've had a look at those too, didn't have a chance to hit one as he did not have a demo club :cheesy:

Geez, how do you decide, I'd be a serious driver ho if the ol' back pocket would come to the party... damn those luxuries like food and heat...

i don't usually slice the ball, but when i hit the R7 460 i did, and then i tried the 425, and i do have to say that it will help straighten out your drives. The face is more closed than the 400cc r7 but nothing too bad.

Try the Ft-3 on a course. If you can get past the sound it is the best driver out there.

Now the FT3, that club will probably get on the list.. erm, ever increasing list... :cheesy:

I had the chance to hit a 9.5 draw model with the stock shaft and was hitting some of the longest drives ever, I don't mind the sound, like I said to the other guys on that day, it can make any sound it wants if it goes 300 straight down the middle!..

i'd recommend trying

cleveland hibore as wells as the 460 comp

nike sq

titleist 905r

callaway ft-3 or x-460

srixon i-506 (threw that one in there too cause i'm using it)

either way i'd hit as many drivers as possible

Ft-3 or SQ... both are great. I think the SQ is straighter but the FT-3 is longer.

Have to agree here with the FT-3. I've got the Bridgestone 420 and 460...both with the 757 speeder and also the 425 TP. The lowest spin rate is the Callaway. It's sounds ugly but does give more distance than the others for my 115 mph swing speed.

R7460, Comp, SQ, 905 R, Bridgestone J33r, ft-3.

On a bargin, the Comp and R5 from Taylor Made are great for the $$$. I like the heads. Forgiving as hell. R5 is a higher launch for me.

The COMP is the best Driver ever made just make sure you get the right loft and shaft combo and you'll be in perfect shape!

Nike... hmm dark horse, hard to find an on course demo here... don't know about this one, just not grabbing me you know..

Hibore, yes maybe, the Bridgestone guy down here does Cleveland as well, I've "seen" a Hibore, but he's reluctant to have anybody hit it, even in the nets, it may be the only one to make it across Bass Strait... the aussies will understand :)

905, yup... I spose you'd have to put it in there.

I'm not sure what it is, but I have a thing for the NVG2, probably cause I have a Mac 5 wood but I notice nobody has suggested it...

I know a guy who has an R5, he loves it, I think part of the reason I'm veering away from the MWT Taylormade's is,... i'm a fiddler, always tweakin' those weights, when I should just be leaving it in neutral and learning to hit it straight, and when it comes to brands I'm kinda in the Taylormade camp... but, I'm getting keen to "jump ship" for a while, try out something new.

Totally agree!!! :cheesy: mine is a Tour issued 9.5* shafted with Diamana 73 stiff......... this combo hits nothing but high launching Bombs!!! the shaft has taken quite abit of spin but the launch has remained nice and high.

I love Taylor products but for my game and swing there isn't any better Driver :) :smilie_cally:
