Weekend Play at Country and/or Private Clubs?

Recommended Posts

xThor, glad you're joining the club. Looking forward to seeing you out on the course. The first event of the year is the 29th and the first Dash for Cash is April 9th.

Which clubs are you looking at joining here in Louisville?
I'll be joining one probably in a week or so.

I'm still researching (and negotiating with the wife, since I'm the only golfer in the family ... ). We live in the Highlands, so the clubs that are within 15-20 minutes of there are the most attractive right now. What's been your impression of the club's you've looked at here in Louisville, and what made you decide to go with the club you did (or are considering)? Feel free to PM me.

I enjoy the highlands area! (My brother works at Cafe Lou Lou).
Lot's of good clubs here, I spent since about October of last year visiting several (Audubon, Oxmoor, WildWood, Big Springs, Woodhaven to name a few) and getting information. I have a couple friends joining with me, and we are all younger (i'm 28, the others are just a bit older, but all still under 40) so I'm going to take advantage of Junior memberships.
To be honest, I'm going to join Woodhaven. The experience I had there was the best (not that any of the clubs are bad, they are all quality options). While Woodhaven's course may not be as elegant as the other Clubs, I enjoyed playing there. But more than that I felt welcomed and a sense of 'good fit', because the interactions were so positive and friendly. It also helps that it's the most affordable on the list, but in my eyes is a great value due to the work and improvements they are making. I'm very excited to become a member there soon. In response to your original question, I would suggest a search here in this subforum, there are several topics that would provide great info (I started one last year and will update it soon), as well as pm'ing members who posted they belonged to clubs and asking questions. That really helped me.

I sent you a PM, hope that helps!

Thanks for the responses! I especially like the idea of checking out the tee sheets if they will let me, or at least getting matched up a time or two at the times I'd like to play. I figure any club that's not willing to work with me on that is probably a bad fit.

I play about 75% of my golf as a single currently, and actually enjoy playing with different people. I'll defintely pay attention to how active the men's club is in the mornings, and how they work in new players. I found the hardest part of golf at my age and situation (post-40 with kids) is not the actual time commitement (although that's an issue), it's being able to coordinate your free time with your golfing buddies. it seems like no one is ever free at the same time.

Rather than asking to check-out the tee-time sheets, one option might just be to ask how tee-times get assigned on the weekend. My club has a computerized lottery system. So you book your preferred tee-time up to 10 days in advance and then the computer spits out the tee-times 4 days ahead of time. After the tee-times come out you can move your time around if a spot's available. It seems like a pretty equitable system.

Plenty of options in the area. I am going to assume you don't want to drive 30-40 minutes from your house, so I won't try to give you the pitch to join my course even though its one of the best deals around and we have some really quick rounds with a "game" on the weekends and holidays that pretty much anybody can join in. If you have more interest PM me.

I won't go into the big money places like Big Spring, Audubon, Lake Forest, LCC, Hurstbourne, etc. If you have the cash for that you are one getting it done at 28 years old!

A lot of it depends on if you are looking for a good walkable course or what. I think there are some like GlenOaks that are nice places with great rates, but its not really a good walking course. If you aren't into walking definitely check them out. I haven't been to Woodhaven. I know they have some low rates. I've heard its a good social atmosphere, but that they kind of lack on the golf side. Right around the corner is Wildwood which is a little nicer and they have some pro's who know the business and probably have a great tournament atmosphere. South Park is running some kind of member special right now that I saw. $700 for the year, so thats a great deal. I've heard its a nice track as well. Supposedly really casual out there as well. Midland Trail I believe is a pretty active club. They operate differently than a lot of clubs in the way they bill and all that. They have good rates, but the way everything else is done it may add up. I haven't looked into it enough.

There are plenty of good public/semi-private courses that have some good pass/membership rates. Nevel Meade, Heritage Hill, Chariot Run, Oldham County, Eagle Creek, Henry County are all solid options with good rates. Good luck!
