Durability of the Pro Platinum finish

To those who have gamed them, how durable is the Scotty Cameron Pro Platinum finish? I don't mean for rust, but rather for getting nicked or marred. The Cameron's I've had until now have been stainless, but I recently picked up a couple of used Pro Plats and have been disappointed with the finish. It looks like the pebble-like PP finish has been rubbed off in spots, which makes it look dark. I don't mean rubbed off like on the sole--more like where it hit against something.

 

I love the Pro Platinum look and was planning to get them refinished at the Studio anyway, but I'm concerned about them down the road if the finish isn't very durable.

 

I will also mention I've seen eBay auctions that mention the Pro Plat finish is flaking in spots. Is this a recurring problem? If the Scotty PP finish is not durable, are there other nickel satin after-market finishes that are durable, such as putterplating.com?

 

I take good care of my gear but I also don't expect it to be fragile.

 

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I used a ProPlatinum for about a season. Here are my thoughts.....

 

* I still feel it's one of the most beautiful putter finishes around. Just gorgeous.

 

* I'm VERY careful with my putters, and always wipe them clean with a clean wet towel, then dry them afterward. I NEVER store my putters in the headcovers for fear of rust/moisture, and I always keep a gel silica packet in the headcover to absorb moisture.

 

* Nevertheless - the PP finish still wears around the edges of the bottom bumpers, develops small scratches on the sole, and if not careful - will get "rub" spots in places, that appear to be dull.

 

My gamer PP still looked good after a season, but in close inspection under bright lights, you could see the wear and tear. Not enough to bother me tremendously, but if I were buying a used one.........I might.

I've been playing a DelMar 3.5 for 4 years and I'd say the PP is holding up fine. I practice and play once a week in Florida. The worst wear on it is on the sweetspot, and that's just slightly scratched up. The sole is like chrome. It has a couple of small dings but they're out of sight. (My sight, anyway.)

 

I know what you mean about the flaking. I've only seen that on the ones that are really banged up. The dings? Well, these things will get banged up from carrying them with a wedge. As long as they don't touch metal, they're fine.

 

Funny. I saw a close up of Conceres'(sic) putter last night and the cavity was rusted. Mine looks new compared to his.
