How to get ballflight down??
Hello
I have a set of Ping i5's with CS Lite shafts in Stiff. I like the shafts - except for windy conditions because they tend to balloon up against the wind..
Is there any way to solve this problem if you don't want to change the shafts? I guess I'm looking more for a ball flight similar to the Z-Z65 or DGS 300.
Soft stepping.Hard stepping??? :russian_roulette:
I don't know ANYTHING about "manipulating" with shafts so ANY info would be great!
Thanks a lot.

You can add some lead tape to the heads which will lower the flight or you can hardstep the shafts. Softstepping will make the shafts play "softer" and therefore increase the launch angle. Ping doesn't charge for hardstepping shafts on new iron purhcases but I don't know what their charge is for sending them back to be worked on. Lead tape is just plain ugly IMHO so that wouldn't even be a consideration for me.

If you're looking to bring the ball flight down to Z-Z65's or DGS-S300's, why not just reshaft with one of those shafts? Of course, there's a big difference in weight between the Z-Z65's and the DGS-S300's so you need to factor that in.

However, you mentioned that you like the CS Lite shafts? What exactly do you like about them? I think you need to address that issue before you proceed with your decision.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response.

I've bought the set used by the way.

CS-lite S: I like the high ballflight in the 3-4 irons because it launches pretty high and it's quite easy hitting it of the fairway (I haven't played this set with a different shaft so maybe it's just the CB on the i5's that makes it easy...). I also like the way the shaft forces me to swing smooth. I think it's pretty difficult punching the ball low though and also rather difficult keeping the ball flight low up against the wind. It's not a major issue but if there was an easy way to change the flexpoint (it's different flexpoints that dictates the ballflight right??) I would consider getting it done. Also I think the weight of the shaft suits me fine.

Hard-stepping: I've heard the term before but I don't know excactly what it means and how to do it.

Lead tape: Don't like the idea either..

Thanks for the help

One shaft option for you could be Tour Fighted Rifle shafts. Their flexpoint changes across the entire set where it helps get the long irons airborne but creates a more boring trajectory in the short irons for consistency.

FYI, hard stepping is taking the shaft of a 4-iron and placing it in a 3-iron and so on. The reasoning behind that is that the tip of the shaft is the most flexible section so by putting a 4-iron shaft into a 3-iron, you've created a harder tip which allows a more penetrating ball flight. Softstepping is just the opposite, creating a softer tip and a higher ball flight.

In fact, my i5's have been soft-stepped to create a 5.2 Rifle flex instead of a 5.5 flex. This creates more flex, thus creating a "firm" flex out of stiff flex shaft.

Hope that helps.

Ping's prices usually run the same as any clubfitter I've looked at so I would recommend using them. Plus, if you use anyone other than Ping, it may void any warranty the clubs come with.

Their turnaround time right now is about 7-10 days so if you can live without your clubs for that long, that may be the way to go.

Also, just know that the Tour flighted Rifles weigh 20-25 grams more than the CS Lites. That may affect the feel of the clubs. If you can get to a retail store that has a Ping Fitting cart, many will let you demo a 6-iron with all of the different shaft options that Ping carries so you won't have so much guesswork.

You can also call Ping's Customer Service Dept and tell them what you're trying to accomplish. Most of them are pretty knowledgable regarding their shaft offerings and can give you some advice too.

Sounds to me like you are looking for a lighter weight shaft that feels great while keeping ball flight down.

Enter the Dynamic Gold SL!! I use this shaft myself, and some tour pros have even started playing it. Looks like standard DG, same ball flight, but trimmed weight is around 100 grams or less.

This shaft is the best I have ever used, and I have used a lot!

p.s. I would stay away from any rifle product, as they all launch the ball high with a lot of spin - great if you are a low ball hitter, but not otherwise.
