old bullseye...

Recommended Posts

so i posted this in the putters forum and no one replied so i'll ask you guys...i went to the basement the other day and retrieved my old bullseye "old standard" model to clean it up and maybe stick it back in the bag. well hit it with the scotch-brite pad and man did it have a lot of dings. is there really anyway to smooth those out other than filing/grinding away half of the club...

thanks

I have a couple Bullseye brass putters, and I just clean them with chrome polish or Brasso. I doubt anything can be done (amateur wise) with all the dings which they seem to attract. The entire putter could be machined to like new status professionally, but it wouldn't be the same as new, obviously weight and size would be less, due to the removal of material.

Your topic has me thinking, how much material is actually removed when an iron is refinished? Some outfits can make an iron like new, with rechroming and such.

Food for thought.

I'm using one that not only has a tribe of Dings, it also has a shaft that is striped with rust where someone sought to punish the club by tapping through the chrome with a sword. I don't dare even attempt to clean it until I can find a genuine replacement. I have a small collection of them but none feel right and I'm still looking.

I think you could do a lot to improve the appearance with some emery cloth and brass cleaner/polish without adversely affecting playability. I used to be very fussy when buying used clubs that they had to be near pristine. That all went out the window when I started to put together a vintage bag. A few nicks and scratches; worn finishes and the like weren't going to make a hill of beans difference to a set that was intended to be played. I bought some pretty well used old metal woods and it was amazing how well they cleaned up with a little elbow grease, some 0000 steel wool and some Scratch Doctor. They're not perfect, but they still play as good as new!

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

I refurbed my flanged one - here are some pics:

Took a fine file (think flat keyhole file) to file down the worst of the dings, followed with something like 5-6 different grades of sandpaper (80, 100, 120, 200, 300?). Be careful not to sand off all the sole stampings, and leave in the worst of the dings - they add character.

Putter is currently in my trunk in case of emergency, and has earned back a lovely patina.

Thanks guys,

Do agree with B-S though - this is about the easiest thing someone can refurbish. File, file, file, sand, sand, sand, sand, sand. Done.

There was a time - Probably back in the 1980s when one could find as many as 5 different Bullseye designed putters in a Golf Store at any given time. They always had that classic look and I've held onto two of em. And have a couple copies to add to that amount. I'm gaming one right now - made by Ray Cook. Black face and brass inserts in the sole.

I picked up one up today for $3 with what appears to be the same model number. I'll have to clean it up. Same as yours with the flange and double site line.

Sight line is an illusion Dr.

The sweet spot is actually just about where the hosel goes into the head. Try hitting a ball on the sightlines then the sweet spot and you'll know what I mean.

I don't know why people go straight to filing and sanding when dealing with a soft metal like the Bullseyes are made of. I picked up a BeCu Kirk Currie with a few dings on it last year. Before I did anything to it I took a small (and I mean small) hammer and a sand bag and gently tapped out the dings. It takes a lot of taps. Keep in mind, the metal is still there, it has just moved a bit so move it back! If you go straight to filing or sanding you will take off the metal that is raised and it will leave troughs. I would prefer to get the metal as smooth as possible before using any abrasives.

I have yet to see anyone here mention this method so I thought I would throw it out there because it works.

Hope it helps you.

I've been playing the old brass Bulls Eye since I read this topic a month ago. As good a putter as anything, I made two birds today, and missed a couple more.

I have two Bulls Eyes, a standard, and a Junior model that I extended to about 35". I've been playing the Junior. I seem to putt better than with my Odessey White Hot.
