Need some help

I was thinking about trying to refinish a putter for the fun of it. My plan was to get an old Spalding TP Mills and seeing what I could do with it. I was looking for some guidance about the whole process. I am familiar with blueing it, so I should be ok there. I do need help with removing the finish and smoothing the surface. I would think steel wool/sandpaper, but a quick breakdown would really help. Then I figure I gun blue. Then I was hoping for guidence on paintfill. This is after gun blue correct? What is the best type of paint and the easiest process. I appreciate all the help. I will take before and afters when I attempt.

Best Paint is testors. Wire brush on a dremmel will remove the old finish really easily. Sanding and scotchbright pads will remove any dings. 000 and 0000 steel wool to even everything up.

 

You might or might not be able to gun blue the head. Some of the older TP heads have different carbon contents so they won't take a good blueing

Can you make a recommendation for the progression of sandpaper? Also, any other types of finishes I could do at home if the gun blue will not work?

If you remove the dings, and do a thorough job of sanding, you can probably just leave the putter as is. I've done two, one matte-ish, the other more polished, and they look pretty good without a finish. No rust either, so I'm not sure at-home finishes would stick.

 

I used the wire brush on the Dremel, then the grinder attachment on the Dremel for large dings, medium sandpaper, fine sandpaper, steel wool (not sure what the actual numbers were on those).

You could get the finish off in a hurry by sticking the head in toilet bowl cleaner for a few hours. Just make sure you don't get the shaft in the liquid, and make sure to rinse the head in water after the finish is gone to stop the corroding. Worked like a charm on a couple of Cameron Studio Designs I used to have.

I did two Spalding T.P s at home , thats what got me started tinkering with putters.

The older Spalding are a roll of the dice as far as what metal it is it could be stainless or carbon steel.

I have one of each of the #10's one stainlees one carbon . The carbon steel one was my Intro to gun blue and the stainless one cleaned up with Scotch brite pads and sand paper.

I did a milled face on the blue and smooth polish/Jeweled face on the stainless one.

I did how ever loose the stampings and cross hairs on both when I did this , but I got them cheap to learn on.

They also putt very well whatever you do to them BTW the head weight is 320 grams on the # 10's.
