I have a set of Precisions with KBS Tour V shafts. Fantastic combination!!!
Precisions with kbs.....wow!!!! Send some pics
How long have you had the precisions? What said you use for shafts before the kbs?
Have you played other hogans to tell us how they compare?

Here is a link to the thread on my Precisions -> http://www.golfwrx.c...gan-precisions/

Other than the Precisions I've played the following Hogan irons;

- 88 Redline (do not recall the shaft, Apex 4?)
- Channel Back w/S300
- 99 Apex w/X100
- 03 Apex w/Apex 4
- 06 Apex w/S300

FWIW, the Precisions are the only set that I haven't already sold (or am trying to sell, Channel Back). Precisions have the best feel of the bunch. That could be the head and/or the shaft though. It's not exactly an apples to apples comparison with the variation of shafts and grips. The 06 Apex is a beautiful iron but I couldn't get past the obvious offset. I liked the 03 Apex better than the 99 which is exactly opposite of most reviews that I seen comparing the 2. The 88 Redline is a great iron with a well deserved following. The Channel Back didn't do it for me. I tried to like them but just never could.

I purchased the Precisions w/out shafts so, at this point, the Tour V is the only shaft that I've tried in them. It's a great combo. I owned a few factory Precisions with TT Rocket shafts and, without a doubt, like them much better w/the KBS.
Wow those are sweet!!!!!
So do you game them regularly?
I will be once the league/tournament season ends. I played them for a while earlier this spring but once I started my league/tournament season, I put my black baby blades in the bag to stay. I'll put the Precisions back in a few weeks.
Just wondering what the hosels are on those 355 taper?

I play my irons around D5 or D6. D4 will do in a pinch, but less than that and it's not ideal.

I also love heavy shafts, once thought of buying a set of Rifle 7.0 because of hints I'd seen that indicated they might be 140g or more. Never went through with that thought... <sigh>

Did you build them out to longer lengths? You've put in a heavier shaft to begin with, and then each 1/2" of length is going to add 3 SW points.

I rebuild my redlines with some Apex pullouts that came in a bit overlength. They now swingweight at D5, which wasn't intentional on my part but after playing them I'm reluctant to trim them back to a more standard length and SW. I did bend the lies so that the extra length didn't leave them effectively too upright.

Yes your right and I did put them to play off of 5 iron at 38" so yes a half inch longer so that makes sense your right

I don't know how you guys play clubs that SW that heavy. Personal preference I guess.

A few years ago I bought a set of Mizunos with Dynalite Golds. They were the first good set of irons I owned (or so I thought at the time). I had them fitted after the fact which involved extensions. They ended up swing weighting D6-D7. It was like swinging a sledge hammer. I had tendinitis in my elbows within three months!

I don't like them too light either, but I seem to have developed a real sensitivity to swing weight. Probably C9-D2 seems to be my preferred weight which may explain why I have gravitated to wedges that match an iron set versus blade wedges.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Amusingly and perhaps ironically, sco, I don't know how you can play irons that light. :)
(I've tried, it doesn't work for me)

I don't NEED the higher swingweight. I imagine that the rest of my irons are around D1 - although my Pings will be lighter still, and I like them well enough.

Swingweight itself may well be overrated as a concept. My irons got to be D6 mainly because I pulled shafts from a set of heads with a deeper hosel. The swingweight would be even higher, but I've got midsize grips on them. At the end of the day, I'm still swinging the same weight head that would make for a "conventional" swingweight in a pretty marginally altered setup, and probably less than 15g increased overall weight. They do deliver a very satisfying cuff to the ball, right enough. But overall, in playing shots on the course, I probably alter the effective swingweight far more by gripping up and down the shaft.

Agree with the swingweight being overrated but it can be a useful starting point. When I rebuilt my heavy Precisions to matching MOI's with modern length shafts I ended up with swingweights from D6 to E2. And I found them to be too head heavy. So now I've changed to heavier grips (bestgrips leather) and also added a strip of lead tape under the grip. Overall, I added about 15 grams (half an ounce) to each handle, reducing swingweights by 3 points while bringing the total weight up. Now they're just right.

I feel like the heavier clubs help my tempo while also keeping my arms from flying off. It's taken a while to get acclimated but I'm starting to play much better with them now.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

I took a chance on Apollo CWS shafts, having found them on clearance and not finding any negative reviews. I wanted heavy and extra stiff so these seemed to fit the bill. It did take a while to get used them. The tip is much firmer than the Apex shafts I was used to, resulting in a harsher impact feel, although part of that could also be from the rechroming of the heads?

I built the 2 iron at 39.5", matching the MOI's to the heaviest one, and I used leather grips from BestGrips which are just incredible, in my opinion. IIRC the total weight on the 6 iron is in the 462 gram (16.3 oz) range.

And if you play persimmon, you're my friend

I've been playing about with MOI matching on paper - and the idea of a slope of 1.35 SW points per inch of club length, per Dave Tutelman.

One of the things I've noticed is that, as a pretty rough approximation (since I'm that sort of craftsman) - choking down on your long irons up to half an inch, and gripping your short irons at the very end of the handle, perhaps letting the heel of your hand overhang a tad - should in theory keep you within a swingweight point or 2 of a matched set.

Obviously, it's not matched - but nor does it entail saws, or shaft extensions or weight stuffed down the shaft. And it's easily reversible!

In a similar vein, I'd like to experiment with lead tape on the shaft just below the grip. This would lower the swingweight on the scale for long irons without chopping or drilling - but not sure whether this turns out to be illusory when it comes to swinging a club for real.
