If she had gone by the 'conventional route' i.e. had a stellar amateur career, followed by a productive collegiate career (no doubt foreshortened to turn professional) and an LPGA career, where her talent shone through and she had numerous good finishes and then, no doubt, wins; how good could she be?

All that natural talent.

Instead, she gets a sponsorship deal from Nike and another from Sony that mean that she's set for life financially; embarks on a series of ill-advised appearances at PGA events where she simply shouldn't be; and then has a crisis of confidence when she (surprise, surprise) performs dismally...

I admit, it must be difficult to turn away the men in suits when they come knocking with a truckload of money, and it would be tempting for me to accept an invite to a PGA event even at my level of play, but still...

She's made a series of errors in judgement in my opinion that have held, and probably will continue to hold her back from realising her potential. How can anyone reasonably believe they're the next Tiger Woods when they're missing cuts every month?

She needs to get the habit of winning (or even playing well) ingrained into her psyche and then concentrate on playing her best golf when she's done that. Until then she'll continue to play as she is in my opinion. And that's really quite embarrassingly badly.

I would end this post with the standard 'what do I know? She's better than me and could beat me' type of disclaimer, but in this case I won't. Because on present form I don't think she could.

It's embarassing. And as perhaps ill-advised as Brittany Lincicome's public quotes were, she's looking more and more accurate by the hour.

Thats true. All the heavy critisism she is taking is really starting to gain a firm root system. Which is very unfortunate for her. The more things like this happen, the harder it will be for her to recover. The next few days or even weeks are going to be a very difficult and trying time her I'd imagine.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. -- Michelle Wie withdrew from the Ginn Tribute on Thursday after shooting 14 over par through 16 holes, aggravating a wrist injury that sidelined her since January.

After Wie bogeyed the par-4 seventh, the 17-year-old star from Hawaii told an LPGA tour official: "We're not going to play anymore."

Wie wore bandages on her wrists during the round and said her withdraw was because she "tweaked" the injury and not because of an LPGA rule that bans nontour members for the year if they shoot 88 or higher. Wie was two bogeys from that scenario when she stopped.

"I had issues with my wrist," she said. "Shooting 88 is not what I think about."

Wie's round included a 10 on the par-5 third hole, when her first drive hit a parked car and rolled down a roadway drain. "It was actually quite funny," she said. "I was going to crawl down the drain to show people it was in play. But I couldn't fit."

After her provisional tee shot went way left, Wie's third drive landed in the rough and she went on to a quintuple bogey.

Wie made a final bogey on No. 7. As she headed to the tee, she was stopped by her manager, Greg Nard. The two chatted for a few moments before they called an LPGA official to end the round.

Wie walked onto the eighth tee, shook hands with playing partners Janice Moodie and Alena Sharp got on a cart with her parents and caddie and drove back to the clubhouse.

Wie went to a private room to have her bandages taken off. She briefly had an ice bag on her left wrist before taking questions.

Wie had not played a tournament since missing the cut at the PGA Tour Sony Open in January.

Things looked promising when Wie teed off on the 10th hole in the foggy South Carolina morning. Her drive landed cleanly in the fairway and she two-putted from about 40 feet for par.

Wie drove into a pond on the 11th for a bogey. She hit a tree with her tee shot on the next hole and made double bogey.

On her first par-3, the 14th, Wie landed in the woods right of the green. She chose to re-tee and again went right. A chip and two putts later, Wie had made a triple bogey and stood at 7 over through five holes.

Wie's problems continued on the par-5 16th as she pushed her drive into clumps of grass. She took relief about 80 yards behind her ball for yet another bogey.

Wie looked as if she had settled her game on the 18th hole with a long drive in the fairway and an approach to 1 foot for her only birdie.

Then came the third hole when Wie's round collapsed.

"It was a bad hole," she said. "Everybody has a bad hole."

Wie hopes to play in next week's major, the McDonald's LPGA Championship.

"I want to be smart about" the injury, Wie said. "But I definitely want to get back playing, so I'm going to work on it."

The entire thing seems a bit fishy to me. Seems her manager made the call to have her WD to avoid a ban for the rest of the year.

Very interesting. I would agree that probably had something to do with her decision.

I agree with Grimace that it does all seem a little bit fishy - especially after reading about the manager. I am sure the wrist was bothering her to some degree, but I don't know if it was enough to quit with 2 holes to play.

What are everybody's thoughts on the WD? Do you think it was valid or a save face move?

I think it may be a little too late to save face at this point. I hope not, for Michelle's sake, but the media can be quite cruel and I bet they will be no different this time.

Let's just say that I ruptured a tendon in my left index finger last November on the 15th hole of a tournament hitting my tee ball and I did not WD. Hurt like heck, but finished the round. The only thing that makes it seem a bit fishy to me is that she talked with her manager and then decided to WD with 2 holes to play. If there was that much pain she would not have waited until that late in the round. This was a shear save face and the rest of the season move. Can't wait for another heat exaustion WD at the John Deere.

Having a little chat with the manager before WD and claiming injury. . . why not just pack it in after nine rather than when she was in danger of shooting herself right onto the couch for the rest of the year? Her actions are very suspect to say the least.

I was a long time supporter of her, but these actions stink like garbage.

It'll be interesting to see where she goes from here. Goosen put the heat on her accepting the invitation to the Deere:

In the week that Michelle Wie returns to golf, Retief Goosen has made it clear he thinks she should receive no more invitations to men's events.

Wie's comeback from wrist injuries is on the LPGA Tour in South Carolina, but the 17-year-old Hawaiian will be taking on the men again at the US Tour's John Deere Classic in July.

"The players in general feel it is not right," said Goosen, competing this week at the Wales Open at Celtic Manor.

"If she qualifies to play in an event then fine, but there are youngsters and good players coming up who could have taken that spot and broken through."

Click here to find out more!

"We all know with her playing in the men's events that she is not going to get anywhere, so I'm not really sure what she is trying to achieve."

"If she thinks it is helping her development then fine, but so far I think it has been damaging to her game."

At 13, Wie came within a stroke of making the cut at the Sony Open and she did make the cut in an event in Korea last year, but last September she had two last places in Europe and America and also struggled at the Sony Open this January.

Recently, coach David Leadbetter said he thought she would be concentrating on women's events, but on that Wie said: "I don't think my coach is the person who would talk about what events I'm going to play in."

"I think that it was an unfortunate event. He got misquoted. I don't think he was represented the way he wanted to."

"I learn so much from playing with the men and I just feel so grateful I have the opportunity to play that kind of golf."

"It brings a different perspective into the way I play and I learn a lot of cool shots from them. I just like it, so I'm going to do it as long as I enjoy it."

I agree 100%, this is a very bad situation for her. I don't see anything positive coming out of this at all. Even her biggest supporters are liking raising their eyebows this time. The long line of excuses needs to stop and she needs to show us where all this talent and potential people keep talking about is at, especially before the well runs dry and she's left standing alone.

if she keeps this up....she'll withdraw from the deere.

she has stanford to focus on.

What does Stanford have to do with anything?

At this point, it is one outrageously bad round. That said, she has yet to miss a cut in LPGA events as far as I know and has a bunch of top 5 finishes.

How quick we are to go into a feeding frenzy when something negative occurs.

I think its odd they completely took her scorecard off the site...

http://www.lpgascoring.com/9379/scorecards/50624.html

If she withdrew before the completion of the round she has no score and no scorecard.

Also, considering how she has played on the LPGA in the past, I would have advised her to withdraw as well. Shooting an 88, especially if she is injured, would have been a disaster for her season. I don't see what finishing the round would have gained anyone. I am certain her playing partners were glad to see her go - or am I the only one who finds it painful playing with someone having a dismal round?

It is possible she intended to complete her round and her manager advised her of the 88 rule. Good for him - that's his job.

Wrist injury...shanks same thing. I bet Nike feels great about their investment.

The sad thing, Nike is probably indifferent from this. They receive the same amount of press if she's playing well or poorly. I'm sure it's not necessarily how they invisioned things to go, but that'll probably be dealt with when the contract is up for renewal.

Anyone remember how long the contract is for?

Well let's hope we don't see the Big weezer for awhile. This stinks most people would give an arm and a leg to get an exemption into a Professional tournament. Maybe it would be best for her to have to earn her way on. i think Goosen is right the PGA should stop giving her exemptions and give it to more deserving individuals. I mean come on there are a number of us who play golf that could at least break 88 on a LPGA event, and I am not trying to be demeaning either. I have the upmost respect for a woman shooting 20 under par for 4 days no matter the yardage.

1. The PGA doesn't give her exemptions; the event sponsor does.

2. Nobody "deserves" the exemption Wie is getting. If they want to deserve something, then they should earn something. Otherwise they are at the mercy of sponsors whose only concern is recouping on their investment.

3. I doubt you have seen an LPGA setup if you think breaking 90 would be easy. Sure, there are a few people here who could do it - and most of them are scratch or better.

4. I don't care if Wie plays anymore PGA events. I agree with Goosen that those events are now detrimental to her development. When Wie first began playing the events she did have a lot to learn from PGA players that she was not going to learn anywhere else. I suspect she has learned all she can at this point - unless getting your a** royally kicked and making excuses is an important lesson...

5. Wie earned $ 730,921 in only seven events on the LPGA last year. Wie beat Annika in 3 of 4 majors finishing 3rd to Annika's win at the US Open. Whatever the feeling towards her play in PGA events she has earned her spot in LPGA events. So far anyway.

We've not been that quick. It's been several months.

and the 'something' is actually several things really.....

Also, I'm not a scratch player; I'm off 2. And I would certainly like to take you up on that bet about breaking 90 on an LPGA course. I genuinely would. Does that mean I'm deserving of some sponsor's invites to PGA events and a big contract with Nike???

Shooting that score would be embarassing for any reasonable amateur player, let alone the 'next superstar'

And I bet most of the LPGA Pros feel the same way.

Absolutely pathetic. The play, and the quitting. And the fact that she even came close to that '88 Rule' is even more ridiculous. It's a bit like telling a driver 'If you have more than six accidents in a week, you'll be banned from the roads for a year..' when common sense says they should be turning in their car keys quite willingly..

I still beleive most men with a handicap of 5 or lower could break 90 on a lpga setup. Now I am only saying setup, because if you factured in the crowds and camera's it might be different. But as far as setup I think most could break 90. I only wish there was a lpga event in Texas so I could play it the day after just to see how hard it would be.
