Tallgrass Golf Course - Closing?

I know that a Chicago based solar farm company is in talks to buy the course and replace it with solar panels. I've been trying to follow the development to see if the plan has been approved. I can't find much information online, does anyone have an update?

It's a great course - Gil Hanse designed and tough as hell when the wind is blowing.

I'm curious what the timeline to this is. They were offering memberships for 2016, but maybe they will have to refund everyone.

Plan is to accept memberships but not charge them until the course status becomes clear in the spring.

Do you live near Shoreham or are you a member? You seem to know a ton more than anything I can find online.

I spoke to Tallgrass management. I'm the one who's written the Golf On Long Island posts dating to last summer, and have been following this as closely as I can without being intimately involved for the past several months. Newsday hasn't touched it in months; nothing out of community papers either. I thought about going to one of the Brookhaven board meetings but followed online video feeds instead.

Tallgrass is/was confident 2016 wouldn't be affected, and they felt positive the community would speak out and force the Planning Board to decline. Yesterday's approval seems like bad news, but I don't really know how these municipal dealings play out from here.

Whether or not a sale is in place pending solar farm approval isn't clear. Nobody's published that side of the story. Contact at Newsday thinks a sale's in place. I would assume there is.

This is an out-of-state company coming in, acquiring a huge parcel of land and covering it with solar panels. Another company already did the same on the sod farm right across the street. The community isn't pleased; the civic group came out against the plan. Didn't seem to bother Brookhaven Town though.

Ahh, love the site, it's really a great resource for LI golf.

I also watched the stream last night and was disappointed with how quickly the planning board made their decision without explaining it. Maybe that's not part of the process. Quick vote and it was over. Who knows, maybe something can occur to stall the deal or have it fall through.

The stream from the January Planning Board meeting has all the Q&A and community input for and against. Some interesting stuff in there -- a few passionate opinions against, and some other real doozies. One of the things the lawyers for the solar farm slipped into the discussion was that the clubhouse and cart path wouldn't be made available for public use as a community center and rec trail, as previously stated.

Seems like a crappy end for Tallgrass, especially a week after it was listed again as a Best Course You Can Play by Golfweek.

Thanks for the compliments!

That's pretty shady of their lawyers but I'm not surprised. I live in Manhattan but I'm moving back to the Long Island and was looking forward to taking advantage of Tallgrass as a great option to play. Looks like I'll have to resort back to the other, inferior, options in my opinion.

It's now confirmed that the course is closing very soon -- just a matter of when. Will likely be in the next few weeks.

I met the former employee from Tallgrass. He informed me that the solar company who is taking over the land submitted plans for solar panels at a certain size, and then changed the size and are currently bogged down in lawsuits. The former superintendent at Tallgrass has left, and the course has hired the previous superintendent from Glen Oaks as a part time superintendent. According to the former employee, the course is in great shape, he recently played it.
