Range Finder / Golf watch / Game Golf Live

The struggle between buying a range finder or a golf watch is now even harder with the Game Golf Live having basically the same features as the watch(?). So has anyone had the same question on which one to get? They are all in the same price range as well, e.g. Bushnell V3, Garmin S5 & Game Golf Live all come around the 300€ mark.

 

Some thoughts of my own:

- All three are legal for comps, I think

- S5 / Game Golf is better for new courses, but I mostly play my regular 2 home courses

- I don't really like carrying the phone in my pocket, or wearing a watch

- I'm an engineer so I like stats & tech

- Range finder is just simple and effective

 

Compromise: buy a 2nd hand range finder & Game Golf? :swoon:

In the past, I have used a laser range finder, GPS watch and the Game Golf App (no tags). I have since ditched the GPS watch and am more comfortable without anything on my wrist. I use the game golf app to track my stats and really like the in-round maps with the ability to find distances to specific points on the course and how far they are from you and the center of the green. To this point, I haven't seen the needs for the tags. Having my phone on my doesn't bother me at all. I usually pull the poser move and tuck it in my back pocket with a flip phone case as if it were a yardage book. I also still use the laser for all approach shots. I find that nothing beats the accuracy of the laser when you're going after a pin.

I use a Approach S4 and a Bushnell V3. The two work great together on the course.

I use a Samsung Gear S with the Golf Pad GPS app, it has worked great for me, I pay the yearly fee of $10, gives club suggestions, layup distance, total driving, handicap and calculates all of the golf averages for every club in the bag...great app

I wouldn't throw Game Golf Live in with either a range finder or golf watch.

 

Since you don't like wearing a watch, but want club distances, I would buy a range finder and Game Golf. IMHO, there's no point on using the the "Live" features of Game Golf during the round.

I guess I'm a poser, or at least a tech geek. I've used a laser for years as I like the accuracy. A few years ago I bought a GPS watch with pro shop credit. It never kicked the laser out of the bag, instead I started using both. I use the watch pretty much only for par 5 second shots or when I hit a wayward shot and cannot laser the flag. Finally, I got a GameGolf Classic that I really like. It's all after the round info, but it's nice to see where my misses are and how far I actually hit different clubs.

Well I actually found a used Leupold GX-3i2 in mint condition very cheaply so that's settled. I do have a gut feeling that using the classic Game Golf wouldn't be as fun as comparing and checking the results during and right after the round at the clubhouse. So for me it seems like there's no going around it and being cheap, I'd miss the Live features too much :tongue:
