Scotland Trip Rain Gear

Whatever you do about rain gear, leave the shorts at home. It will certainly NOT at any point be too hot for regulat slacks.

 

I always pack the extremely lightweight and quick drying Underarmour golf pants to wear each day. No rain pants. If I get caught in a brief shower I put on my Goretex jacket and put up the umbrella. Pants get wet from the knees down but will dry in less than an hour once the rain stops.

 

Then again I'm not going out and play golf if it's bucketing down all day. Never seen more than one day in a row on many golf trips to the UK. Goretex jacket and/or unbrella will work in any weather that I'll play golf in.

 

Good and bad thing about east coast weather in June is it is totally changeable. Bad because no matter how nice it is you might be 20 minutes away from it turning awful. Good because it seldom stays awful for more than a few hours, a day or so at most.

I played in shorts today, 19 degrees and nice and Sunny. I say bring your shorts!

I guess we all have different approaches. For Scotland, I would take shorts, definitely take gore-tex pants, add a rain hat and leave the umbrella at home. If it's rainy AND windy, an umbrella is useless (and in fact is more of a nuisance to carry). And wearing gore-tex pants over shorts works great in even dry, cold and windy conditions. Granted it won't be as stylish. But for me, it's all about function over form. This combo is lightweight, comfortable and warm.
