Swing by Swing issues

I started using the Swing by Swing app on my iPhone this year. I heard such great things about it, but I have 2 concerns. 1- I have to restart the app 3 or 4 times per round as the yardage won't update. 2-I think the distances are off. My friend has a range finder, and my app is usually 10-15 yards off.

What free app do you find has the best accuracy? I would like to make a switch, but there are so many of them out there now.

Swing by swing is not a very well put together app. They have pretty good data, just their mobile apps suck. There's a new app that I heard about yesterday on r/golf on reddit called Pattern Golf. There's a free version but it's limited. I've put two rounds in with Pattern Golf so far and it stays open and doesn't drain the battery but maybe like 8-15% for a whole round.

I love swing by swing and haven't had either of those problems. Yardage isn't dead on like a laser all the time, but within 5 yards whenever I check it, which is close enough for my game..

Accuracy of GPS apps is NOT based on the app, but on the GPS sensor in use and how that GPS sensor has been configured. You can change the settings for the GPS on Android phones to increase the update frequency and accuracy (no idea about iPhones).

Swing by Swing does some things fairly well. I love the ability to preview (explore) a course and the fact that they include the practice range. My main problem is that the current technology for phone screens is really lacking when trying to view them in direct sunlight. That problem makes viewing actual photographic satellite imagery very difficult. I'm looking at moving over to an app that uses detailed "drawings" of the holes so that I can actually see the hole layout details while on the course.

My league is a "traveling" league and we play a lot of new courses that I have either never played before or have had very limited time on. I must have an app that is reliable for showing me the hole layout and so far it's been Swing by Swing for me as it's been the best of the bunch that use satellite imagery.

Has anyone had success logging rounds with the Android wear app?

The first round I tracked with it worked flawlessly. The app has gotten stuck on a hole early on in the round. You can record a score for the hole but the interface never advances to the next hole.

It's probably operator error. I eventually give up on recording the round so that I can stop obsessively tapping my Android watch and swing my clubs instead.

Has anyone had similar problems with the watch app?

Zero problems here with swing by swing on iPhone for yardages, and I've played 200 rounds with it. My estimation is its within 2-3yds of actual on iPhone 6.

You can select how often the GPS checks your position by going to - help - settings - app settings - power usage. Obviously it uses more power to have GPS constantly checking. It's no issue on a newer phone though, mine is always set to high and uses only half the battery in a round.

I recently started using this app for Android and have logged 5 rounds so far. For me it has been great. I didn't get the looper membership, so I can only see distances to the middle of the green. I used it against a rangefinder on a day when the pins were placed middle, and it was within 2-3 yards every time. Plus, all the stats and trying to beat your previous scores and stats makes it fun for me. $200-$300 for a watch or rangefinder? I think I will take the free app that does more than either of the others combined.

It works great if you don't mind spending a lot of time with your face in your phone while you're playing. I moved on to using a club tag based system. You're playing partners will appreciate your faster play... ;)

I use Golfshot. I recently upgraded from the basic free version to the pay + version. The paid version give move distance info instead of just middle of green. It does seem to be about 5yds off compared to my Dad's GPS tracker, don't know what brand it is but it's accurate enough for me. I like being able to keep track of shots. You can track your shots as well but I usually only do that for my drives.

I tried Swing by Swing and didn't care for it as much. The free version was more limited as I remember. Golflogix is one that uses a graphic representation of the holes, which makes differentiating hazards easier than the satellite imagery but the free version has ads every hole so very annoying. I stopped using after only a few holes and went back to Golfshot.

I would say if Swing by Swing is working for you stick with it.
