Nikon Coolshot 20 Rangefinder vs. Bushnell V3 Patriot Pack

I know there have been other discussions on these range finders, but I got an e-mail from Dick's Sporting Goods this morning that showed the Nikon Coolshot 20 is on sale for $170, down from $199. They also have the Bushnell V3 Patriot Pack for $250. Dick's also sent a coupon for $25 off $125 worth of golf purchases, essentially making the Nikon $145. I've never used the Nikon 20, but have messed around with a friend's Bushnell V3. I thought the V3 was nice, but am wondering if it's really $80 better than the Nikon?? These seem like very comparable range finders. I would appreciate any thoughts that anyone has on this subject, as far is if the Bushnell is really $80 better. I can't imagine it's $80 better, but I've been wrong before.

That's pretty much what I figured. It really is amazing how big the price difference is with some of these range finders. I just can't believe that some are hundreds of dollars better than others. Either way, I appreciate your feedback.

If you have steady hands and great eyesight any rangefinder will do. If you don't then its probably better to spend a little more money and make sure you try before you buy.

The Nikon 20 is excellent. It replaced my Bushnell v2 which is very similar to the v3. The key feature for me is the small size. I just put it in my pocket while playing and thus have no fear of losing it. Plus it's waterproof where the v2 wasn't. I think the v3 isn't waterproof also (but I'm not positive).

I picked up the Nikon last year just for the driving range distances. I use a Garmin approach G6 on the course however I'm starting to use Nikon more on the course as well. It picks up targets fairly easily.

 

I should add that I have not used the Bushnell so I can't compare them however I have had no issues picking out targets and flags with the Nikon.

A buddy of mine just received the Patriot pack from a client and he said its the best one that he has ever used.

It's good to hear that the Nikon is reliable. I also looked into the Garmin approach S6 watch, but it's very expensive, requires charging, and I'm just not sure I would like the idea of a watch on my wrist while I'm playing. I like the fact that I can keep the Nikon or Bushnell in my bag along with some spare batteries. I'm not a big fan of constantly having to recharge a GPS watch at home, where I could easily forget it when I'm going out to play.

I've had a Nikon and now a bushnell. The Nikon is as good if not superior to the bushnell

I agree with what has been expressed in most of the posts so far...the Nikon will serve you well. But if you like the looks/feel/size/whatever of the Bushnell better, then get it. No difference accuracy-wise.

Nikons have a scan mode, sorta... it goes 10 sec or something like that. the 20 is also very small compared to the V3- good if you want small, not so good if you cannot hold it steady.
