What Did I Buy on the Bay?

Recommended Posts

Took a chance on these for the price. Seller described as...

Cast Aluminum Golf Club heads for custom clubs 3- 9,SW,PW Velicitor/Golfsmith

I don't think these are cast aluminum, but I could well be wrong. The seller didn't strike me as being very golf knowledgeable. Again, I could be wrong.

Does anyone know anything about these heads?

I got 3-SW coming and if they're good heads I will mount them on a set of Grafalloy Blue pulls I picked up at a thrift for $4 total in mint condition outside of the grips which I have already stripped and will replace.

This is a link to the original auction then a couple close up pics of what's coming...

I'm pretty sure those are cast stainless as the barrel hosels (no ferrule required) are pretty thin. The tumbled finish is very similar to an old Spalding Canon 2 iron I once had. Aluminum would be much too light and weak to make a clubhead, and the low price/quality alloy of choice (when barrel hosels were in vogue) was always zinc, with the giveaway being a fat hosel as the alloy wasn't very strong.

edit: You'll want to countersink those hosels 20* before you put your graphite shafts in them (they don't appear to be from the pix) or you'll risk breaking the shafts, though I know you have next to nothing in them. That little bit of epoxy cushions the stress point of the shaft.

Tim, you need to spend more time at the course and less time on ebay! My Grand Daddy had a saying, " a fool and his money are soon parted.". I'm not saying you are a fool my friend, but really? Why would a golfer of your experience want these heads. I guess I am just totally surprised at this. I don't know what to say. Please don't be affended by my comments. But, ah hell dude, should have kept quite. Sorry!

Everyone's entitled to their opinion.

I don't know if they're going to be good, bad, or indifferent but I enjoy building clubs. With the shafts I picked up and grips I ordered I'm going to have about $45 total in them. I play twice a week every week by the way. I played 124 rounds last year. You?

Tim, I got it all wrong. Read someting into your post that wasn't there. After 3 drinks I'd pay $45 to see a fat kid eat a bug! Build a set of irons for that? Absolutely! My error, so sorry. By the by, I play 4 or 5 rounds most every week. I love it as much as you.

Cool project. Might be very instructive taking a set of no-name, cheap-a** heads and seeing what it takes to make them work.

Passing resemblance to VIP/Muirfields, you can have fun putting your own grind on the sole and leading edge and still polish them up a treat if you like. He'll, I'd be interested in how they feel with graphite shafts compared to your Mizzies.

If you have time before you build them I would be very curious to see the naked weight of those heads. Wonder if they are as light as the old Mac Syncrolite heads. I know those were made of some kind of waste alloy. If you do not have time that is ok I was just curious because I never saw or heard of those before

Tim,

They definitely are muscle backs. If I stretch my imagination just a little, I can see shades the old "Confidence", and even MacGregor VIP by Nicklaus irons. Top lines look a little thick comparatively speaking. But I don't see anything scary. Shaft a couple of those bad boys and give 'em a go. If you like them, reshaft the rest. If you don't like them, so what.

Ok, I have them in hand and I'm still not sure what I bought!

Here are the weights...

3I = 239g

4I = 245g

5I = 259g

6I = 256g*

7I = 268g

8I = 271g

9I = 279g

PW = 294g

SW = 311g

They feel a little light in my hand but not ridiculously so. Are these maybe a zinc alloy mix or ???

Does a magnet stick to them?

They Are a zinc alloy. I chipped a hosel while doing a counter bore grind on them. A piece flaked right out! Despite that I am still going to shaft them and give them a try for jokes and jollies. I ground down the chipped hosel and inserted a Callaway style ferrule with an internal collar flange.

Edit: On further consideration I am unsure. I will wait a couple days at least before deciding what if anything to do with these. I may just wait until I have the opportunity and means to buy a decent set of blade heads. I really want to try those Grafalloy Blue Launch shafts though.

IMHO they almost have to be with the various weights between the mid iron heads
