Need some reccos for Kansas City

JackpotJohnny

Recommended Posts

Going to be in KC for a few days next week and wanted to try to get a couple rounds in.

Last trip, played Tiffany Greens so that's out.

Staying in lees summit, and want to try and keep away from going too far north or west, so shoal is out too.

Here's what I've got in no particular order. If you guys could help me rank them, or throw in anything I might have missed, I would appreciate it.

Stone canyon

Adams points

Swope

Drumm farm

winterstone

A couple caveats are that there's a groupon going for 2 @ the deuce. Even tho it's just going to be me, I'd be willing to pay it and make the drive, just to get to play a national course If it's really worth it.

Canyon farms isn't out of the question, I just heard somewhere that wasn't in the same class as it once used to be.

Thanks in advance for the help !

First, I'll add some courses near you that you don't have on there.

One of the best non-private courses in the entire metro is Creekmoor down in Raymore, MO. Fantastic course that I've played 3 or 4 times and it's been in pristine condition every time. Fantastic layout as well. They do allow public play, but I believe it will run around $60 during the week and $70+ on weekends.

IronHorse is also in that area and another really nice course with a great layout, but it might be a little more expensive than Creekmoor. I believe you can find Hot Deals on GolfNow though for it.

Avoid the Deuce for $100. I've played it twice now using their Groupons and both times the greens were slow and just not in great shape. Tiffany Greens is in better condition almost all the way around and it's not private obviously. It's also a shorter course at around 6,250 from the tips.

For the courses you've listed, here's how I'd rank them:

1. Stone Canyon

2. WinterStone

3. Swope

4. Adams Pointe

5. Drumm Farm

Canyon Farms actually went private on 4/1/16, so not sure if you can get on there but I played it before it went private and it was in pretty good shape. I believe they're in the middle of putting white sand in all of their bunkers but not sure where are they with that project.

Swope is a classic Tillinghast design, cool to play in an old school way.

The others are all solid choices. Might check out Shoal Creek as well. Also in Lee's Summit is Fred Arbannas is you want an inexpensive option, decent public course that is a good layout in decent condition.

Deer Creek is pretty nice at 135th & Metcalf. It's a shorter course but usually in good shape. It's challenging with narrow fairways and sloping greens. They usually have some pretty good deals running, especially during the week.

Right next to Swope is Hillcrest, a Donald Ross design. Great layout but last time I played it, it was in bad condition. I mean who can't grow zoysia in the summer? Anyone played it recently?

I grew up playing Hillcrest in the 70's and 80's. First hole, par 3 235 yards, OB right and big gulch to the left. Excellent Ross course!

They modified the original design on several holes. The postage stamp green on #2 had so much back to front slope that a putt above the hole would roll off the front in the heat of summer.

Too bad if it is falling into disrepair.

I played Hillcrest a month or two ago and thought it was in good shape. Not fantastic or anything, but definitely not what I could consider bad condition.

Yep, Stone Canyon is one of those courses that I always say if it was 20 mins or less from my house, it would be a no-brainer for me to join there. Too bad it's more like 45 mins away so I don't get out to play it as much as I'd like.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've got to be in BS in the afternoon Friday so stone canyon Friday morning should work perfect.

I didn't even have creekmoor or iron horse on my radar, but they both look like exactly what I was after. I'll do one of those for sure and probably swope last if I can get in another round between all of the eating I'm going to be doing

Although it's too late to help the OP, I would definitely recommend Creekmore as well. Been considering moving out there in fact.

As an aside, I haven't been out to Stone Canyon since Marty Streiff let it go to hell. Has it made a comeback since the developer purchased it? Used to be one of my absolute favorites despite the 45 minute drive. Thanks!
