Solo Scotland Trip-Last Minute!!!

Recommended Posts

Alright, so I have done some searching through the forums, but like everyone else I assume my question is unique and want to make my own post.

My company ended up shutting down fairly recently. Totally sucks, but already have another job and have been left with a bit of 'me' time in between. My golf friends weren't quite so lucky to lose their jobs, so they can't really drop everything and come on a golf trip with me. I see this as a good opportunity to make my first trip to Scotland. I found some pretty good reward flights to Edinburgh and Glasgow for next week. I would probably leave 8/23 and spend about a week over there. The big course I would like to play is the Old Course, and that sounds semi possible at least with the balloting system. It seems like the St. Andrews area would be a good place to make home base. I would plan on renting a car but don't want to spend the whole trip driving.

The big question is regarding what I need to do in preparation for the trip. It does make me nervous to just fly over there and wing it, but as a single it seems like that might be the best way to go about things. And if anyone would recommend making a different location my home base, or courses that are more friend for singles, please let me know. And of course if any of the locals are available for a round I would love to hook up!

Go to the websites of the courses that you want to play or call them. Many will allow a single to make a tee time in advance. I prefer to have advance tee times for a morning round and then wing it if I want to try for a second round in the afternoon any given day. St Andrews is as good a place as any for your first trip to Scotland. In addition to the seven Links Trust courses in St, Andrews you can play two courses at Crail, Elie, Lundin, Leven and Ladybank without breaking the Bank. If you want to spend some big bucks add Kingsbarns to the list and that will keep you busy for a week without too much time in the car. Try the ballot for the Old course and whteher or not you get on TOC, play the New and Jubilee.

So, snpcrk121, did you and your golf clubs end up in St. Andrews in August 2016?

If so, what courses did you play? What courses did you like best?

As a single, was it easier to reserve tee times or the opposite?

(i'm considering a similar trip myself and would like to benefit from your experience).
