AJGA Qualifiers

Recommended Posts

Okay so I am getting old... I understand the AJGA performance based entry. It is much different from when I played when we just submitted tournament results in what I guess would be considered a mini-resume and the acceptance was much more subjective than it is now.

However, I don't understand how AJGA qualifiers work anymore. I know the players can take tournament exemptions in lieu of playing the event. What I don't understand is how players who finish well down in the qualifier field get into the field. Are they actually using prior exemptions from other qualifiers or is something else going on? For example... at the Rome Qualifier this week 3 who shot 75 didn't get in, but 8 with high scores, including an 82, "qualified." I saw this in other qualifiers as well.

The 82 could have better resumes, I qualified for the one in Dalhousie with my performance stars and just a resume that I sent in which is how most qualify that arnt exempt.

I understand that you can get in via performance stars - this is similar to the way it was 10 years ago, but the performance stars add some objectivity to acceptance. The players I am confused about were those who were not accepted to the tournament and played in the qualifier, but were not at the top of the qualifier field.

The same thing happened at Dalhousie where a 79(t-17), 82 (t-27), 83 (t-31) got in via the qualifier - when 78 (t-13) appears to have been the qualifier cut line since 2 78s got in and 2 did not.

The reason that the higher scores are getting in is because when a player OPTS OUT then they have to go down the list for the next player in line.... BUT that player in line circles the opt out then they have to keep going until someone wants to play in the tournament.

so therefore that 83 got in because all those 78's and scores lower were all playing the qualifer just to get a exemption and opt out.

Next year i can see things changing because the qualifers are getting crazy with the amount of opt outs!

Thanks! I was very confused by what was going on. It does sound like they might have to revise opt out procedure/process.

What does it cost for a non-member to play in a AJGA qualifier??

i was wondering the same thing....is it even possible to register for a qualifier without paying 205 dollars to be a member of the AJGA?

The qualifier fee, i believe, is $75. You don't have to be an AJGA member to be in a qualifier, but I think you have to be a member to be in a tournament.

Yeah, but it is near impossible to get into the qualifier if you are not a member.
