HITTING OFF THE TOE...........

We have all heard that if a club is too SHORT for our stature, that it can very well lead to hitting off the toe. My question is why? I am looking past the obvious common answer that it is too short! What I mean is....when we address the ball with reasonable posture...and the ball is in the middle of the face...why would we hit it of the toe? The club doesnt know it is too short...and remember we are talking an inch at most in club length. There is no way we can tell a postural difference in a 38 inch 5 iron versus a 39 incher. So...as I asked...why does a short club cause a toe shot? Slicefixer...any thoughts????

more so than the length i would check the lie angle of your clubs. you'll have to examine your divots to determine if you have the correct lie angle. if you notice that your divots are deeper on the toe side or the heel side than you may need to get your lie angle adjusted. you need your club sole level with the ground to ensure that you can hit the center of the face. if one side raises up or down then it'll a lot more difficult. go into a club fitter and ask to hit off a lie board. they'll put lie tape on the sole of your club and each swing will show if you have the correct lie angle or if you need adjustments.... other than that, you may just have a slight swing flaw. hands drawing into your body during downswing, cutting across the line, not releasing your hands, etc...check your divots to see if they have one side (heel or toe side is deeper) and go from there.

4 primary reasons for toe hits IMOP......

 

- clubs too short for the players SET UP or body type (too far from the ball)

- standing too far or too slumped (too much spine angle/tilt) at address......creates an inability to "hold"/maintain your "angles" during the swing.......

- stuck and too narrow causing a "wipe" impact off of the toe.....club is attacking too much from inside and behind the player

- too weak a grip in the left hand......causes toe wipes IF you don't use your hands/arms to square the face

 

The "answer" for each individual is usually contained within those 4 things.......and is usually easy to figure out, explain, and relatively easy to fix.......
