Questions on clubs, lessons et al

Mods, if I have posted this in the wrong section please feel free to move to somewhere more appropriate. ;)

I am just starting out, literally been on a 9 hole 3 par course the other days, (shot 49 but managed to squeeze one hole in on par, Yay!). Im renting / borrowing stealing clubs at the moment as I have decided to throw my cash at a decent instructor who will video my swing etc.

Question 1. Is this the right thing to do? Lessons vs Clubs?

Question 2. I have been offered a set of used clubs that I am considering.

So apart the guy's poor spelling etc what do you think about this set? Does it represent good value for money and also would it be suitable for a beginner?

The guy is 6'1" , 74 years old and a big feller, but I'm 6'4" myself.

Should I go for it, or put together my own set. Someone mentioned that I could get away with an iron set, driver, PW and SW and putter to start with. I have a budget of 500US$ to play with for everything including cart bag, is this possible?

Really appreciate any thoughts or insights you can share.

If you're just starting TGW is running some deals on whole sets with adams and wilson to get you started, the one adams set was like $360. I'd personally do this and then spend the rest on playing/balls/lessons if I were to do it over.

Don't forget about Ebay for used golf equipment. There are some great prices on used clubs there. You might want to look for a more forgiving set of irons if you're just starting out...something with cavity backs.

Personally I think you cant go wrong by getting lesson right at the beginning, it will save you from developing some bad habits on your golf swing. I would recommend demo some clubs before buy new or used. I personally demo the Cobra S9, Mizuno MX 25, Ping G5, and Nike Slingshot OSS. I personally found that the Cobra S9 was the perfect fit for me, which the Mizuno MX 25 was a very close second. You can find these clubs used at a very reasonable price. I would also suggest you get fitted, so you know the proper length and grip. Plus a good fitter could look at your swing and point you in the right direction on irons. Good luck.

Take some introductory lessons which will introduce you to pre-swing fundamentals. During that time with the instructor, you can seek his/her input on clubs.

don't buy clubs until you see a pro for some lessons, get your swing into a somewhat consitent state and THEN get fitted for clubs... don't buy off the rack set unless you know it's going to fit your swing...
