Restricted Equipment Tournaments -- what would interest you?

I've been playing a bit of hickory golf, and it's pretty fun. I also occasionally like to hit steel-shafted persimmon woods, or irons from the '40s through '60s, or even just drivers from 10 years ago. The hickory golf enthusiasts have a specific set of equipment guidelines for tournament play, which got me thinking about other possible historical era tournaments. I wonder what other people would find interesting to play, or maybe to watch professionals attempt to play? Let me know what aspects you think would be interesting, or how you think you'd fare with different equipment relative to today's technology and restrictions.

Slightly different to what you're suggesting, but I like playing with less clubs. Something like a wood, three irons, a wedge and a putter. That way you can play your modern equipment but it brings back the creative shot making and finesse shots with the longer irons.

What do you guys do for golf balls? That's really the biggest difference.

Would love to play any in this older stuff, no metals, hickorys, etc. Just don't have the sticks. If there were some provided id be there.

I've been wanting to do a classic tournament for a while. I dont get into hickory, its a very different game, for sure, but you would call my everyday bag "classic". I agree the ball is a big difference, but if there were 3-4 agreed on balls to choose from, I feel it would still be fair. No way to get enough consistent balata balls for a whole field, and the clubs are still the same. As far as drivers, I play wood anyway, but feel if we limited the head size, wed end up with an even field.

 

I can't tell you guys how much I've wanted to see a tourney like this, hell, even someone to play with in my area who likes the old ways, bit there's not much appreciation for it locally. However, as a fairly middle point in the country, and with a good relationship with many local courses, id be happy to organize the event here in Colorado if enough people want to play. Lets do this!!

I've always wanted to try a hickory tournament but none have been offered in my area. Particularly one that provides the clubs so I don't have to bother with assembling my own set. Would also be interesting to have a "one club" tournament - each player is only allowed to have one club for all shots, can be any legal club but you can only have one.
