We went last year on a trip and I've played many in the area. I can't comment on winter conditions though.

My favorites:

La Cantara Palmer course (Blind tee shots and shot placement important, one of those courses you have to think on every shot)

Cedar Creek (Municipal course but fun track, was in good shape when we played, 10 and 18 tee off small cliff to a valley)

The Quarry (back 9 inside old Quarry, Front 9 was a bit boring to me)

La Cantara Resort course (get a deal on tee off or I personally don't think its worth it but still nice course. Memorable tee shot towards Fiesta Texas)

The Bandit (East of town, usually in good condition, pretty good track)

Haven't played but on the list:

Brackenridge

The Republic

Both TPC courses

Canyon Springs

Silverhorn

Course I want to play again the most is La Cantera Palmer Course

Course with the best deals typically, the Quarry.

It's a real shame that San Antonio has had a gem of a course in Pecan Valley, which hosted the 1968 PGA Championship. won by Julius Boros.

Was an outstanding track, but fell victim to golf management company's philosophies.

I remember the 9th hole - it might have been the 18th for the PGA - was a great, reachable par 5 (that was probably outdated as equipment made courses effectively "shorter"). An eagle there could really turn a round or match around.

So sad to know that another outstanding layout that I played in my younger days has gone the way of the dodo bird.

It is only the 2nd course in the US to have hosted a major and fail to survive into modern day golf.

Are you kidding?

(1 & 2) TPC San Antonio - Oaks and Canyon courses. May be the most challenging and scenic courses in Texas.

(3 & 4) LaCantera Resort and Palmer courses

For great scenery and shorter courses - Tapatio Springs in Boerne

The executive 9 was pretty good at Tapatio but the other 18 were boring. But I'm pretty sure they have redone it since then.

Last I heard you have to stay on the property to play the TPC courses. Have played the LaCantera Courses, The Palmer was much nicer than the Resort course.

Since George Strait bought into ownership, a lot of improvements have been made.

I think Tapatio is ideal for scramble golf - if you like to make birdies!

The Senior Tour used to play there in the past.

I prefer the Resort course, where the Texas Open was played for years. Don't like the Palmer much, if you want to score well - too many huge elevation change holes that are tough if you don't play there a lot.

Tapatio Springs...a really cool track. Did they ever get a paved road into the course? When I played it BITD you drove thru about 1/4 mi of cow pasture to reach the course.

George Strait is an owner now - even has a condo there - you can stay there for a grand or so per night - not exactly cow pasture stuff.

There's a beautifully paved road winding past beautiful farms and mansions now.

Must have a while since some have played it.

Re:TPC

I stay at the Marriott and love it. Wife and kids love the lazy river swimming area.

No courses in SA come close to the beauty, quality and challenge of these 2 courses, except La Cantera.
