TaylorMade M2 irons demo day fitting

Recommended Posts

So I went to a demo day over the weekend and tried out the 2017 TM M2 irons - during the fitting the fitter/demo guy was trying to get my ball flight down because according to him I was hitting "moon balls". I tried a few different shaft combinations but nothing seemed to really bring the ball flight down. After the fitting I looked at the recommended shafts and they were True Temper XP95 S300 - after looking them up those are a shaft for those looking for a high trajectory - to me that doesn't make sense if we wanted to bring ball flight down wouldn't I be looking at a shaft for lower trajectory?

My SS was around 96 mph with the 7 iron - I was hitting the M2 around 165 yards when I squared it up but there was a lot of dispersion.

I understand that this wasn't a full fitting or anything but since there are so many shaft experts on here I wanted to see if someone could enlighten me.

Xp95's are definitely high launching. I have them in my mizzy's. However, the high launching shaft can help with the extra strong lofts of the m2 irons to get them launching like standard lofted irons...I.e., that strong 7i is really a 5.5 or 6i in a traditional loft, but with the high launch shaft, you may be able to get the same ball flight characteristics as the higher lofted 7i's.

there are a few things wrong here ... first of all, the demo guy (it certainly wasn't a fitter if the rest of the story is true) gave you the highest launching iron head from TM ... if you do not hit that thing high with your clubhead speed than something is seriously off. Even with a C-Taper 130X (a very low launching shaft) your ballflight would have been high

you clubhead speed (if true) would be above PGA Tour average ... the M2 irons are one of the longest irons you can get ... the 7iron loft is 28.5° (which is roughly between most tour players 5 - 6 iron ... then your distance with 165yds is almost rediculously short for that swingspeed ... so either you were mishitting them completely or another thing was wrong :-)

there is a good reason why you do not see many M2 (or alike) irons on Tour ... those things are great for slower swingspeeds and people who need help getting the ball in the air ... apart from that with a mid 90mph swingspeed you would get almost 20 yds gaps between the clubs in an M2 so you would pretty much be "between clubs" 75% of the time

I hope you didn't end up buying them if your initial statements were correct because that would have been a terrible decision and good money wasted on the wrong clubs

Go to demodays to try out new equipment ... but don't expect to get a good fitting at one of these events
