Destin area golf - early June

Head slightly north and play Blackstone in Defuniak Springs. Shalimar Point in Shalimar was always in decent shape and was a fun track for short money. And the Eglin AFB courses are decent as well.

We played 9 at Windswept this morning before the rain hit. It has a nice layout and is pretty well-maintained. The greens were on the slow side. The folks in the clubhouse were as nice as they could be.

 

I wanted to play Kelly Plantation but have been out-voted and we're playing Windswept again.

Blackstone is a pretty nice course, but Windswept Dunes is a lot better.

Played the back yesterday to complete the round rained out on Monday and then the front again.

 

Despite being cleared to go off the back, we were told by the starter that we couldn't and she had to go to the clubhouse to see if we could. By the time the starter returned and let us know that we could go off 10, we were told that a 2some was approaching 9 green, it was inconvenient for them for us to start on 10, and that we shouldn't get in their way. The 2some might have waited a minute or so once. And that wouldn't have happened, if there was even minimal communication and we didn't have to wait. The starter was very unprofessional in an incredibly simple situation.

 

When we asked to play the front again, we were able to go without any problem.

 

The greens were much slower yesterday than Monday. I thought the rain Tuesday and Wednesday might have been the culprit but was told they were able to mow without any trouble. The greens weren't soft from the rain. The two sand traps I hit into had very little sand.

 

Outside of the incredibly rude starter, I thought it was a pretty good experience. I liked the course and may play it in the future.

I played Santa Rosa Beach Golf Club on Wednesday for a $50 hot deal and the course was in great shape. I really enjoyed the course as did my brother in law and father in law. Pretty fun little track with a good mix of holes to go after and target golf. We were staying in Blue Mountain Beach so it was the closest course to us, but will definitely play it again next time we're in the area. The three of us finished the round in under four hours.

So I played Windswept dunes twice this week. Nice course with wide open fairways. Shot an 84 and a 75. Main difference on the second round was knowing the holes better and just better putting/chipping. The course was in good shape with greens that run medium speed. The fairways were wide and the bermuda grass gives much fluffier lies than the bent grass I play on back home. Part of what I like about coming down south on vacation...almost hard not to get a good lie if you hit the fairway. Not a ton of memorable holes but certainly not a bad layout either. Had no problem holding iron shots into these greens...even 5 irons. We got a little lucky today as there was thunder and storms all around us but we never got one drop of rain. My brother in law and I both chipped in for birdie on 18 so it was a great way to finish the round.

I'm staying in Seasode this week til 7/8 and camp creek is. It reciprocating during the week of the 4th. May try Santa Rosa or Sharks Tooth. Anyone else playing golf in the area this week?

I'm down July 17-21 and only have a 7:20am on the 20th booked at Burnt Pine so far, anyone gonna be down in that time frame?

I played at burnt pine and the raven a last week and the greens were still in rough shape from aeration, especially burnt pines. The raven was easier. burnt pines has a ton of water

Greens weren't real fast but due to rain, I can't blame the course. Top ten -20 I've played. Would be top ten if I played when the greens were faster. If you're here and you haven't played it, do so. I doubt you'll be upset.

Really? In told BP is in great shape, may take a ride out there today before dropping coin on subpar conditions.
