It may not be an "over the top" move, but it would certainly be an out-in approach to the golf ball.

Pull left usually means an over the top w/closed clubface. As if you look at it like this:

1> Pull left....ok assuming you aim straight, pull would be left

2>Pull left.....assuming you aimed correctly and then pulled it you still would need a closed face to go left badly of where you aimed.

 

So a pull left is two things: Over the top (meaning your club comes over the "plane" and then the face is closed (typically)

 

If your face is square or open you will hit it straight or fade it....so not that far off from really good shots...LEITZKE

i have trouble aligning my torso/upper body. my feet can be pointed left of the target (im a lefty) and my upper body is sometimes aimed right of the target. i swing pretty square and along the target line if anything (tee almost always points slightly left), but i still tend to pull the ball. when i (over)compensate and close my shoulders, i start hitting duck hooks. any ideas?

Check alignment first. If you don't understand alignment, then look into it. In many cases, poor alignment leads to poor club path. In general a pull motion is caused by an incorrect path, however, understanding why you are creating the incorrect path might be a more important issue.

well my misses are either that pull left, or high weak fade, or in rare instances, a slice...

 

just trying to see what's going on, so it's pretty obvious on those misses i come outside in... most cases it's the pull and it's only 10-15 yards left of my target which isn't anything to moan about...

 

when i was coming too far inside, i was hooking like crazy, and getting some dead pushes right, like 25-30 yards right of my target line..

Not a teacher by any means, however if you are pulling and also seeing "power fades" and slices I would think you are coming out to in on the swing path. I also fight a pull at times but that can be a hook as well. No bad fades/slices and in my case it is my upper body getting in front of the ball to quickly aka upper body slide. I find when I focus on keeping my center rotating and not "getting in front of the ball" that I don't have the problem.

i hardly ever hit a "pwer fade"... they don't start left, they'll either start on target and just fade, or start on target and take a sharp turn right... those make me sick to my stomach... :drinks:

Lets see if I've got this straight here. Every so often I miss the green with an iron due to a 20-40 yard pull left. The ball flies straight but its a gonner as soon as it leaves the ground. If I read all this right, its because of the path of the club, not the face being closed. Do I have that right?

This happens a lot to me too. I *think* I've figured out why it is happening. I'm bad about keeping my left wrist flat at impact, and this is especially true with wedges because I'm taking an easier swing and not trying to hit down on the ball as much. As a result, my wrist breaks down and the ball flies straight about 20 yards left of target (from about 100 yards in). Concentrate on keeping your wrist flat and see what happens.

It's an OTT with a clubface that is square to your path.

Pull hooks are fun too!

It's a blast when follow up with a push slice on the next hole.

I have been suffering from this as well. I'll hit a great drive, slight draw down the middle. Next tee, pull left (goes far) and then the next tee maybe a high push, I can't figure out what the heck I am doing here....frustrating 'case the straight drives are near perfect.

For me it's always the lack of a full shoulder turn that causes this. YMMV.

yep my straight drives are bombs with an ever so slight draw... then i'll get those pulls left that go nearly as far but are 20 yards left of the target line... and then a few of those crap push fades... :beach: that usually get me in trouble...
