How old must golf clubs be to be considered a classic?

I definitely believe the term classic should be a term of distinction. For example a 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra is definitely a classic. A 1971 Ford Pinto is certainly not a classic. Maybe old car but not a classic. A MacGregor 693 is a classic but I would probably not refer to a Golfsmith Persimmon wood in the same light. Then there is a term ..... Classic style. I game a set of 1999 Ben Hogan Apex blades. I would definitely refer to these as being designed in a classic style but maybe not call them classics as of yet. These irons are still very relevant in today's game and comparable to the forged blades being produced today, yet these are almost 20 years old. Some golf items can be referred to as classics because of their extinction. For example, Footjoy Classic golf shoes (yes, the leather soled and leather/rubber soled versions) are definitely classics even though these were last produced less than 10 years ago. Other than ebay or some for sale site (or GolfWRX member who has a couple of almost new pairs for sale ..... me), these shoes cannot be ordered or purchased. That train has left the station.

 

Golf is a classic game but an evolving game. For some of us, the bridge from now to years gone by and to the legends of the game is built on the classics. Maybe this explains why I have a couple of old golf bags (one staff and one huge display) in my office to hold my collection of classic woods.

Hmmm...my preference would actually be a '65 Shelby AC Cobra Roadster with a Holman & Moody NASCAR 427 side-oiler...beyond CLASSIC!!!
