Bend's Out West Golf Trip 10 states

I decided to play Awarii Dunes Friday morning. Might as well.

 

Might as well continue the Jim Engh Golf Trail, haha.

 

I am so very close to being sick of driving. I am going to skip Awarii Dunes, just dont want to backtrack. I have driven pretty close to 3200 miles since 6/28.

 

I think I will just play Willow Lakes which is an Air Force Base golf course south of Omaha.

That is a lot of miles Bend, understand being sick of driving. Don't remember the exact schedule, but just for your info, Quarry Oaks is about one mile off I80.

Wednesday, storms developed to the north. Last 6 holes had a 20+ wind from the north, helped on 16 (9 iron in) and 18 (GW in), made them both easier as the ball would stop on the green. Both par 5's on the back played long.

As is typical of a Links course the wind is its only protector. When the wind dies down (virtually never) with those wide fairways and greens scores go down quickly.

 

I have tried to get my wife to let me buy a membership to WH but being 240 miles away she keeps saying no. I figured we would only have to go 1 weekend per month or play about 10 rounds to make it worth the cost.

I liked it quite a bit. I had 3 doubles on the front, mostly because "I rushed" playing through 3 groups. Settled down with a 41 on the back. Very little wind yesterday, if any at all. Played pretty firm, fairways could have been a bit firmer, but were not wet. The surrounds around the greens were really nice and the greens were dry and very, very FAST. I played the black/silver combo tees, right around 6300 yards.

Dog sitter needs to drop off the dog a day early, may have to skip Kansas City tomorrow, which is OK because KC isn't all that far from Cincy and none of the courses I scouted out there were must plays. We can go there any time. Arthur Bryant's BBQ will miss me!!!!!

Glad you liked it, that style isn't for everybody. It is my preference by far and I love chasing a 5-iron onto the green by landing 20 yards short and having to play pitch shots 50' right of the cup. But some do not like golf that way

 

That style IS for everybody, they just don't know it yet!

Moab is not that great for golf. Mountain biking or hiking is another story. You should have played in St George Ut/Mesquite Nv. Great golf and cheap in the summer. Sand hollow, Coral canyon, the ledges, wolf creek, conestoga, palmer oasis, and many many others. The Hideout is a fun hidden gem. I liked that course. I love piñon hills. You should have played Black Mesa in NM. It's like Redlands Mesa. Looks like you had a great time. Wildhorse is nice also. I stopped there on the way back from Sand hills which is in my top 5 in the USA.

St George was too far away this trip, it's on my radar!

 

A local in Santa Fe said that Black Mesa was still in terrible shape, so I skipped it.

Well my wife talked me into going home a day early. I did not play today, but she promised me another 4-5 day golf trip in the future. The courses I missed out on were Willow Lakes amd Swope, which were only going to be played because they were on the route home. Deal.

 

I driove slightly over 4200 miles, played 18 new golf courses, saw a few cool sights along the way and had a great time playing golf.

Well played! We are envious as we have only played about 70 different courses, we collect a logo ball from each. St. George is a great place, but not in the summer. We try to go late September, and it can still be too hot.

Links de Sante Fe (Marty Sanchez) was way better than I expected. I really liked that course. LaFortune Park in Tulsa was pretty fun as well.
