getting on as a single without camping overnight ?
is it possible ? looking to play aug 28,29,or 30 midday or afternoon tee off time

because i will be flying in from vancouver i would like to know if i can get on for sure more than 48 hours in advance

i saw one advance reservation service/broker but they wanted $750 for a single confirmed tee off and transportation
for that price i would rather go back to bandon and play 3 rounds

can anyone recommend a hotel nearby bethpage ? been to nyc many times before so this short trip will focus mainly on golf- i might want to rent a car and take a scenic drive around long island - is it possible to go into the pro shop at
shinnecock to check things out ?

thanks for any help or reply

I was just up in New York this past week and my father and I went out to play the Black course one morning but they closed the course due to rain. He then went up to the ticket counter and asked them if they could put his license in the system so that he could try and get a tee time online in advance. We got one for 2 days later at 8:03 AM, $104 per player, you just need to get lucky.

If you're looking to play mid-week and mid-afternoon as a single, I don't think you'll have any problems getting a spot as a walk-on, though I would still recommend getting there early in the morning to sign up for the mid-afternoon time.

As for the Shinnecock pro shop, I've only gone in when I've been playing there as a guest but it is on a public road and I'm confident that you can just park in the lot and walk into the shop without a problem. In fact, I know that the membership and the club pro both love it when non-members make purchases from the shop. If you continue down the little road that the pro shop, clubhouse and parking lot are on, you can also drive by National Golf Links and Sebonack- but I don't think you can get access to those pro shops.

I was up there in early May. I called the tee time line 48 hours in advance and was lucky enough to get a time at 8:00 Friday morning. So it is possible. You have to register before you can use the automated tee time system, so be sure and call the pro shop to find out what to do a week or so ahead of time. After I played 18 I went in and checked if there was another time available and there was about an hour later. I had a little lunch and played the Black again. Walking 36 holes on the Black almost killed me, but I was glad I did.

I thought it being a state park, the greens fee were pretty inexpensive (i was thinking in the 40-60)-- so its 100 a round there?

It's more for non-residents. Resident fees are $40-50.

I'm going to be around NYC the weekend of the 18th and 19th. I read this thread, but just want to be clear;

if i go through the registration process (I've called the proshop), what chance to I have to play the black course as a single walk-on on Saturday or Sunday?

I assume (if it works out) my day will look something like; show up at 5am, put my name down, wait for an open spot around 10am to noon. I'll definitely do it, but being that its my only free day on my first trip to NYC, I'd rather not make such a commitment if there is half a chance i don't get to play.

thanks for you help/advice,

The registration system is not through the proshop. It is a different number (fax) that you have to send a copy of your driver's license and ss#, and phone # to.

If you get registered and call after 7:00 pm, two days before you want to play, you should have no problem getting in as a single. Then you don't have to show up early.

See the other thread in the "style and travel forum" about the Black, I think the thread is titled with something about what other course to play in addition to the Black.

As a single, i wouldnt even bother with registering, as was stated.

If its for an aftenoon time, i always got there around 10:30AM, grabbed whatever was on the board (usually 2-3PM), hit some balls and putted, then hung out at the first tee.

The started usually needs people to fill openings so i usually got off around 12:30 or 1 PM.

Even at 2:30 you can still get the full round in until about mid august.

Its sorta sucks cause you get stiff while waiting, but its worth it to get to play the last 4 holes.

Whatever you do have fun and hit extra club going into the 9th green, theres always a good breeze up there (and dont bite off too much of the corner on 7 from the whites, they really left the rough grow in right of the fairway..and of yeah, dont go for 4 green in 2)

I'll try and call Thursday night at 7pm for a Saturday time anyways, but thanks for the info, I was worried about showing up and not getting on. and show up at 10:30am? nice, I was getting mentally prepared for getting there by 6am on Saturday...

BTW, I've heard at some courses that you have to provide your official index to play from the blues (i.e only under 7.0 can play from the tips, etc.). How's that work on the Black course? I'm a 4.9, can i just play from the blues?

  • 2 weeks later...

For those who will look this up later, this is exactly what i did to get a time on the black course:

as an out of state resident, i faxed in my DRL to get registered in the automated tee-time reservation system, called a few days later to get my ID number. Waited until 2 days before, and at 7pm called in. It took about 8 to 10 minutes to get through, followed the prompts, selected noon as my preferred time and ended up getting a time at 2:12pm.

A pretty easy, painless process... for a single.
