Be able to keep the ball in play off the tee, just have a standard shot that will go straight most of the time, even if it's only 200 yards or less. Then practice practice practice at 100 yards and in. There is nobody in the world who hasn't benefited from practicing around the chipping green. A good drill is to put tees around the hole at 5 feet and 10 feet, then see what your chip shots are like then. Another one I like is to keep chipping until I chip in 3 times or whatever. This keeps me focussed on the aim of the shot, making it. Practice your putting from 10 feet and in. If you can get your chip shots to inside 10 feet, then those putts are the key par savers that give you momentum. Believe me there's nothing worse than having no confidence on short putts

depends on your weakness............for most people practicing the short game chipping pitching and making those nasty 3-5 foot putts on a consistant basis. The rounds when I "go low" are the rounds I make all my 3 to 5 foot putts, and get up and down when I miss the green. I once shot 75 on a tough course and hit only 4 greens in reg. I shot 72 the other day and the guy I was playing with said he had no idea my score was that low becasue of how I was hitting it. It was not a good ball striking round, but when I did hit the green I made 4 birdies and I got up and down from the junk on several occasions. I actually had several holes where I had to scramble my a** off just to save bogey.

 

The best drill I know of is to get one of those 6 foot long roll out putting greens , roll that baby out in front of the TV and practice hitting putts every evening untill you can make about 50 in a row, this will really help your confidence on the course. Also try the drill Mickleson does when he practices.

If you think about it that is what makes Tiger so good, not his 350 yard crooked driving.

All great advice from the guys above.

 

No need for me to repeat any of their tips but if you want something simple to remember on the course try taking one club more and hitting easy with a 3/4 swing. The results might surprise you as you are likely to fly the first few greens.

Also draw a line on the ball and use it for putting. Don't get too wound up about the break. Just read it intuitively as best you can, line up the ball and concentrate on getting the speed right down that line.

Distance control with your irons and speed on the greens saves a lot of strokes and makes the game more fun.

 

I don't play golf every day but I do swing a club every day. At home I get in front of the mirror and practice body rotation and keeping the shaft on plane.

It depends on what part of your game needs work. If you hit every green in regulation and rarely make par, you might as well set up camp on the putting green. If you make pars by getting GIR's but a missed green seems to be a dropped shot to par every time, work on your chipping. If you aren't putting it in the fairway a high percentage of the time you are not playing to your potential. Even if you hit greens from the rough, you will save strokes from the fairway by putting it closer.

 

Stock answer to this question: 100 yards and in.

 

And if you hit your second s*** 6 feet from the pin and 3 putt like me, kill yourself.

on par 4s just get the ball to the green in 2 or 3... WORK ON SHORT GAME.. i cant emphisize that enough. if you can get there in 3 and 1 putt. youll get par most of the time and bogey all of the times you dont get par. 3 putting really kills your score.
