Site not working at work

Recommended Posts

Since the changes
On the positive side my productivity has increased.

But since the latest software change I haven't been able to access GolfWrx from work.

The odd thing is that I have two computers there. My laptop is connected directly to the net with no firewalls, and my work computer goes through their network.

Neither can access GolfWrx. I get a blank page with 'done' in the left hand corner. I normally use Firefox, but IE 7 doesn't work either. My work computer uses Safari.

And yet, as this post shows, if I bring my laptop home and hook up via my home connection without changing a thing, all is fine.

I've tried flushing the cache, and history etc.

Even more bizarrely, the same things happens with Golfsmith, but in reverse. I can't access their site at home, but can at work.

Any thoughts?

If it matters, I am in Australia.

As a test, have you tried another browser like Firefox instead of Safari? You have deleted Internet Temp, cookies, etc for IE?

Scroll past the bottom of the last post and you'll see "Lo-Fi Version | Privacy Policy | Contact Us" in the bottom border. Click on that and it will give it to you without most of the formatting and images.

Now that's going to be hard to do if you're looking at a blank page  but there should be some way to modify your profile maybe so it's saved on the site. You may be able to change that at home and have it persistent so when you log back into the site at work it will be in effect. If that's the case and it works then you know it has something to do with the formatting/html/java/ whatever.

Okay, when I was at work today, I did a google search until it linked me to a lo-fi page. I could view that from work, but only view the forum.

I also tried clearing cache, cookies, et al on both IE and Firefox.

When I did it with IE, I was able to get the home page (www.golfwrx.com) once. Couldn't go anywhere from there (got the IE error page "Cannot Connect"). When I tried to get back to the home page, no go. Only the error page.

No change with Firefox. Blank page only.

Hmmm, I guess it's time to PM Scott or post over in the website help area. I'd say the Lo-Fi version is a different set of "shadow" pages minus the images and formatting. Not sure what the "can't connect" can't connect to. But if there is some general format change they went to, that should point you to what you need to change in your browser settings.

We still have not been able to reproduce the problem. Can people tell us what screen resolution they are running at?

Also,

Is it the homepage and forums or only forums?

Everything. Except the home page screen once in IE after clearing cache, cookies, history, etc. (described above).

I'm not sure why screen resolution would matter (from what I see, its clearly a connection problem - but, of course, you have no way of knowing that because you can't see what I see), but it's either 1024x768 or the next one up (sorry, can't get the VPN to connect right now.)

Charlie_Foxtrot,

I should probably stay out of this since I really don't have a clue but... did you try changing your profile at home to turn off that automatic sidebar menu that pops out when you mouse over it? Is that a java script? just a thought... come to think of it I'm not sure that's there on the home page. (I'll just step out of this one now)

Okay, it definitely has something to do with a conflict with the work connection.

I run Firefox PE (portable edition) because we aren't allowed to install Firefox on work computers. PE runs on a USB flash drive.

I brought the flash drive home and I am using it right now to view the board and post.

What in the board upgrade could cause that kind of conflict?

We are trying to replicate the issue....Until we can do that or have someone savvy enough who can see an error, its hard to tell. We are trying to figure this out but, it really is not making sense to us at the moment.

If it looks like strictly a connection issue then probably a firewall issue.

Does the upgrade use any new ports?

Does the upgrade establish any back connections?

It could still be a PC difference. Did you say you brought your work PC home and it worked?

If not there could be plugins missing, scripts blocked, etc. in the image they used to image your work PC.

(I know, I know, I said I'd butt out...)

One thing you might try is to install ZoneAlarm (free edition should do the job). Zone alarm will block or tell you each and every connection and port both outbound and inbound. Install it. During setup do not config for any default profile but put it in strict mode and "learning" mode where it's going to ask you for each and every connection. Do that at home, answer ok, and note or log each one. Do the same at work and see if they match. If the firewall is blocking something inbound or your PC blocking, or not originating something then ZoneAlarm won't see it. You can uninstall ZoneAlarm after the test. just a thought

If it helps, I use a laptop which I take from home to work. The site works at home but not at work on this same laptop. I also have a Mac at work and it doesn't work on it either.

I'm using Firefox 2.0.0.6 and IE 7.

Oddly enough this has done the trick for me as well. I downloaded Safari for Windows and am now able to access the site.

This is very strange because Safari on my Mac doesn't work, and Firefox and IE7 on my Windows machine don't work.

Go figure.

Does anyone know if there is a Portable Edition or U3 version of Safari? Our work computers are monitored for the installation of "unauthorized software" and only IE is authorized.

If I want to run anything else, I have to find a version that runs from a USB drive, like Firefox PE.

The problem is related to gzip encoding. I turned it off for the front page for CF and he could load the page but very slow. Gzip encoding is used to compress html pages and increases speed of load times by up to 70%. At this point we are trying to see if there is a bug in software or a code error. Since its not easily replicatable, correcting the source of the issue has been trying.

We just made some adjustments and it looks like it worked. Please reply back if you are still seeing blank pages.

Woo hoo. It's now working as it should from both Firefox and IE.

Safari for WIndows is having trouble (can't reply to post or reply to posts even when logged in), but Safari for Mac is fine.

Thanks guys.
