Old Training Aid - Anyone Ever Seen One of These???

Ok,I have no idea where to post this thing. Mods, please feel free to move it to somewhere more appropriate if you wish. Its from the 60's so I figured I would try to put it here first.

So I'm in an antique shop today and the guy behind the counter who knows I like old golf stuff asks me if I have ever seen one of these. In short....NO!

So I do a little research and turns out this is a training aid that was made in 1968 by Warren Orlick...former PGA of America President and former head professional at Tam O' Shanter Country Club for many years. He was known as "Mr. Rules". I wonder how "Mr. Rules" figured this thing was ok since it says on the box you should use it at all times on the course. Old article in a Michigan newspaper says he and a dentist who he gave lessons to, created this wicked looking thing. This think looks like a damn switch blade. Its a spring loaded wedge of metal that you spike into the ground to keep from swaying.

Well anyway, the guy has 6 of these things still brand new in the box and he was trying to peddle them on me. I told him I would post it here and see what everyone thinks of it. Any ever see or hear of one of these things? Any other thoughts???

Tom Watson talks about placing a golf ball under the outside edge your right foot when practicing to promote hip turn and prevent lower body from moving laterally on backswing, same idea?

Definitely the same idea. I think the golf ball would be less spooky than this thing.

I was sold until I read the directions. I would need a pair of 40 year old etonics so I could remove two metal spikes and lock this thing in. Might make a good tire block to keep your car or trailer from running down a hill.

Good analogy! The thing really does function like a tire chock. It looks like it might still work with the right soft spike though. Still not willing to give it a try. I'm afraid I may break my neck and tear all the ligaments in my ankle. :taunt:

I was thinking it would tear the crap out of a green. Now another practice aid is cutting a 45* angle of wood like we used to use to make a door stop and practice with that under the right foot. One of my old man's training tricks. With the golf ball if you have "happy feet" like I do you can bust your arse---- Ask me how I know--never mind :busted_cop:

I play a ton of "dew sweeper" rounds where the guys mowing and I follow each other around and my shoes frequently clog up with wet grass clippings (and leaves this time of year). My "balance" and footwork have led to a few instances of slippage lately- damn, I miss metal spikes!!

I am missing metal spikes every time I have to replace those plastic spikes which is about 3 times a year now. I remember some of the last metal spikes that came in Foot Joys had tungsten in the middle and they would usually last me a season rotating out 3 pairs of shoes. In those days I played and/or practiced every day. Now I play 1 or 2 days a week and do not practice as much mostly chipping and putting with tennis shoes on then. I am rotating out 2 different pairs of shoes and still have to change spikes 2 if not 3 times a year in each pair

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
