Lower back injury

Well, I just got a taste of my first back injury, and I gotta say it no fun. Went golfing 3 weeks ago and that day I was really stiff and tight in my lower back. Got to 17 a short par 3 after my swing I got this major pain in my left lower back. Went for physio and family doctor that morning and both said I had a lower lumbar strain. It took 1 week before I could basically sleep through the night and 2 weeks before I could tie my shoes.Its been 3.5 weeks now. Finally played my first round of golf, been doing a LOT of stretching and muscle relaxers, but I still have discomfort at times during the round obviously from the twisting and bending. Everything is back to normal except this discomfort at times.My question is, have anybody else gone through this and how long before its 100%.

I feel your pain brother.... Happened 3 years ago, the worst back pain ever..had trouble getting out of bed some days and golfing just killed me. It was a muscle that runs from my hamstrings up underneath my a** cheek into my lower back. So check this, had my first ever accupunture treatment, was gone for 2 years! It came back this season after a 10 day golf trip in Myrtle, this time 2 sessions got rid of the problem. Good luck to you hope you feel better.

For this kind of injury, if you do not impose new injury to the old, 3 month more or less to feel 100%.

I did injure my lower lumbar from hitting lots of range balls for weeks ( thought if the pros could hit 1000 + per day, so could I , but they did not hit off a mat like I did ), couldn't even roll over in bed for days.

Take care and make certain you're healthy again before you put that full swing in motion.

ICE ICE ... boy I had a back injury from playing hockey ...in a full contact league well into my thirties...

 

I finally had surgery and I wish I had the surgery two yrs earlier.. for now ICE and rest..

Frozen vegetables work great.

I feel your pain. I blew out my back three times in my life. Once picking orders in a warehouse after hitting two large buckets at the range earlier in the day. Since then twice when I was sitting at the desk all day as a computer programmer. The last two times I was only able to crawl around the house for days. I think my case was a herniated disk. I agree a back issue takes a long time to heal.

 

My suggestion is once you get healthy enough, maybe during the winter try Roger Fredricks Secrets to golf flexibility. I used to stretch but I never really did it right. I am not an infomercial but after doing his combination of stretches and learning how to stretch correctly I am a big believer in his routine and method. When you boil it down it is nothing more than yoga stretches wrapped up into a package for people who had issues with yoga before. I never could get into my wife's yoga, all that NAMUSTAEEEE weird stuff. Still do not get into all that but I do dig the stretches, and feel great after doing it now. Being MrMom I have lost close to forty pounds since staying at home, and still need to lose another twenty plus [Like I said I was a programmer]. Losing the weight and doing the stretches I have been able to play golf again pain free so far (knock on wood), also not using a short putter anymore. I can not stress how much the weight loss and stretching has allowed me to really go at it like I used to.

I'm 42 and have played sports my whole life. I blew out my back 20 years ago playing basketball and have been to chiros ever since. They've given me good stretches I do every morning as well that seem to help and keep my visits to all of them limited. I just recently starting taking a new nutritional beverage called Mona Vie. Bo Van Pelt and Serena/Venus Williams all take. 19 diff fruits and the advanced formula has glucosamine and esterified fatty acids to help maintain healthy joint function. A couple of times a year my lower back flares up. Lots of ice for the first few days of new pain and then a mix of ice and heat. I would stay away from muscle relaxers in the drug form, I find it makes things worse in the long run. I also use something like Advil to help control the initial inflamation. If you work at a desk consider getting an exercise ball to sit on instead of a chair. Just make sure you stay active even if it hurts (unless there's something more serious like disc problems.)

 

As far as getting back to 100% for playing golf... I would avoid pain killers when playing. You want to know if a certain movement is causing strain; pain killers will just mask the issue until later. I usually also feel that discomfort for the first few holes, but as I warm up it goes away... unless I step in a rut and jar my back or make a bad swing. I bought a pushcart this year to take some strain of my back and I think it's working out. Good luck to you.
