Backswing help

across the line
I've been working on trying to get into a solid position at the top of my backswing. I want my clubshaft to be in a straight line with my left arm, kinda like Tiger and Sergio. My problem is that I come across the line at the top. I've been trying to keep the club outside my hands on the backswing but still no change. can anyone help?

Go out in you back yard & grab your driver by the head end & with your normal set up, swing the club a few times fast enough to make the shaft swoosh....

Where does the shaft begin to whistle/swoosh?

if it begins to swoosh anywhere behind the ball you're casting the club & most likely swinging it out side the swingplane because of that... the swoosh should begin at the ball & continue forward...I wouldn't be so concerned with a static position at the top....once you get the feeling of delaying the release of the club head, it will naturally fall into the proper slot at the top... swing it a few more times handle down...slightly slower, then grip the club normally & try to get it to whistle again at the ball & forward....HTH, Peter

Thanks for the info but im definitly not casting the club. I've got a lot of lag coming into the ball. my problem is that im not solid at the top of my backswing which leads me to inconsistent ball flights like hooks and blocks. This is why I feel I need a more solid position at the top. Anyone else have any info on how I can truly stop coming across the line in my backswing???

Thanks for the info. I've actually tried all of those drills and stuff but still no change. Its weird because my practice swings are good but when i get over the ball, its when i go across the line. i really want to get my swing shorter and parallel to my shaft address like Tiger does. I think it might be my takeaway. Does anyone know how Tiger does it?

T_mac,

Of the 6 reasons for crossing the line from the linked thread, you need to determine which ones are present in your swing and work to get those out. No quick fixes here. There is a good and cheap training aid to limit right elbow flexion to 90 deg. called a swing extender that you can probably find for $10 on line. Right elbow over flexion is one of the most common of the 6 causes.

I have the same problem. My practice swing looks like a scratch to sub scratch player and my real swing is way past parallel. I can't stop it. I tried taking 3/4 swings and just hit either 160yd. pop ups or wormburners. I'm trying little by little with a weighted club to get it shorter but it will take years to get it parallel, if I ever do. I don't worry about it all that much, I drive it long and consistant enough to break 80 so don't get too hung up on what it looks like. A lot of guys on here don't grasp the fact they are not dealing with guys who started playing last week and shoot 137, losing 17 balls a round. I've got about a quarter-million swings grooved so it's not like it's going to be "Eureka!!".

Let me know if you find something that helps out though. I'd be interested in giving it a shot.

A couple areas to check.

1. Check weight distribution during address, make sure you aren't too much on your

heels or toes.

2. Check your takeaway, make sure you're not swinging the club too far inside initially.

I've seen several students over the years, who take the club back too far inside and

reroute the club into the 'crossing the line' position at top.
