Re-Bending Irons for Lie Change

I didn't see a specific post on this subject, so here goes . . .

I have a couple sets of irons which I'm considering having the lie angles changed a second time. They've already been bent 2 degrees upright from their standard lies for my swing, and I'm wanting to get them bent back to either original spec or even 1 degree flat for donating to a girl's golf team (along with shaft changes). I'm wondering if there is a higher risk of breakage bending them a second time back to the original position or even beyond. Both iron sets have relatively long hosels and 431 stainless. They were initially bent with no problems.

Normally, I do my own club work except bending, so I have no expertise there. Thanks for any feedback.

can be a roll of the dice, being stainless helps in the fact of fatigue. 3* is about max. I love the fact that your donating the clubs to youth golfers , it nice to meet someone else who does this.

No problem at all unless they are poorly made. Think “Tour model” brand garbage.

Also, even if well made, Every now and then you can just get a fluke and a hosel May have a weak spot or a small void. I had a Cally Apex two years ago and just one of the heads had a visible void inside the hosel about half way down. Freaked me out a little but it was in an area that would not be stressed by bending. A buddy still plays them today.

Cracking is a potential any time you’re bending 3 or more degrees but it is very unusual in general with quality clubs.

As far as “fatigue” goes, You would need a great many bends to worry about any metal fatigue.

The first set bent back okay, except for a lob wedge that cracked. The irons are 431 stainless Acers, the wedges are Maltby Tricepts. Turns out the Tricepts are a cast 1025C carbon steel that is cast, then struck once (not a true forging), and do not like being bent. I got the shafts and grips so all I have to do is put them together (when my garage is tolerably warm).

I'm kind of on the fence about the other set, KZG's, that have less bounce and the hybrids are more along the lines of a "players" club. Probably not good for the young ladies. I may give them to the boy's golf team, or First Tee.

I'ts possible the recipients of your generosity don't care about the lie angle. Another consideration is to donate them as is, if you are concerned. Nice gesture!

True. The boys golf team got the KZG's as-is, and will probably just replace the OS grips with standard-sized ones. The girls golf team, on the other hand . . . having observed their swings at a tournament last year, I thought it would be better to reconfigure that set for them. Many of them play with hand-me-down clubs from their dads. They just don't have the swing speed for the stiffer shafts and have trouble getting fairway shots airborne.

Frankly, if my teen joined the golf team (none of my kids cared for golf, though), I would be vested in getting equipment that would match their swing. Less discouragement, and the possibility of playing well enough for a college scholarship.
