In order

Gateway National - open, linksy, all bent grass, great view of downtown. Really good holes, can play very long, often windy. 15 min from downtown in IL

Annbriar - half linksy feel, half in woods. 30 min from downtown (south) in IL.

Spencer T Olin. 30 min from downtown north. If you go here, make sure to go to Fast Eddies afterwords for very cheap, but good bar food and cold drinks.

Pevely Farms. ;30 min from downtown S.W. Wooded, Arther Hills course,

Missouri Bluffs Again, 30 minutes west of downtown, wooded Fazio layout.

On the cheaper side (Spencer is not overly expensive), also consider Aberdeen, Normandie and Forest Park.

If it is important, Gateway, Spencer, Aberdeen, Normandie and Forest Park are walkable.

As to hotels, not sure of budget.

Have you been to StL before? I can give other suggestions if wanted (restaurants, etc)

Some food thoughts:

Steaks:

Citizen Kane's in Kirkwood

Al's on the landing (downtown).

Seafood: Bristols: Olive and 270

Bar: McGuirks Irish Pub (Downtown/Soulard area)

Blueberry Hill - The loop/University City - burgers, darts, good music.

Tap Room (either near downtown near union station or Maplewood (about 10 minutes from downtown).

Mexican: Chuey's Ariziola (sp) - Dogtown (midtown, near the Zoo and Forest Park)

Italian: Too many to list on the Hill (midtown near Hwy 44 and Kingshighway). Zia's, Cunettos (long wait usually), Gian Tonys. Dominics, Gittos, Giovanis (expensive but good)

First off for the red meat:

Totally agree, Kreis' Restaurant at 535 S. Lindbergh is awesome (phone 314-993-0735 advise you get a reservation). It's kind of "old school". You really should wear pants and a polo. Waiters are formal but the atmosphere will remind you of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin.....RatPack style. You must get the prime rib and if your really man enough....ask for the King Cut.

Golf Courses (no order):

Quail Creek

Tapawingo

Stone Wolf

Gateway National

Anbriar

The Orchards

The Bluffs

Pevely Farms

Links at Dardenne

Downtown is a good option; especially if you want to catch a game. If no budget, there is the Ritz or the Chase. You can get some rooms for a bit over $100 a night. If that is in your budget, the Chesire in Clayton might work (I have never seen the rooms), but they have a cool bar that is very reminiscent of an English Pub. By my (Fenton), you can get decent rooms in new hotels w/breakfast and high speed internet for around $60. Problem is you are 20 or so minutes from downtwon.

There is also the Westport area which has a lot of bars and restaurants. Not very close to a lot of the golf.

IMHO, the best golf is in Illinois and the better restaurants are, by and large (with the exception of Kreis and Citizen Kanes) closer to downtown. If you do play golf out west, I need to suggest Annie Gunn's. Great restaurant, but reservations can be hard to come by.

Are you guys driving, flying? If driving, that might make a difference.

Also, I live in the SW and grew up in the central part of town so I have no idea of things north and nw of the city.

Belk Park in Woodriver (just accross the River from STL) is very nice, cheap and well maintained muni course, also. There is a city called Collinsville, IL, which is only about 15 miles from downtown STL and right on the highway, that would have some decent and affordable hotels.

Some of the best food/dining experience is in an area called Clayton, MO, which is just outside of STL (going west).

You might try in the Fairview Heights area - either close to Hwy 157 or 159 (I have seen a number of hotels from the road and google maps lists a bunch of options). Note: the area west of 157 to St. Louis is VERY sketchy. That area does have, though, from what I have heard :drinks:, some "nice" "gentlemen's clubs".
