Low spin shaft suggestions for avg Joe ...

Recommended Posts

I have been using a 9* Epic SubZ with a 63g Hzrdus Yellow HC 6.0. My swing speed is between 95 - 100. When I get hold of one -- it can go about 240-245 carry -- and roll out another 20-30. My SkyTrak shows my spin with this setup as 2000-2200. Awesome -- Except I spray it all over. I think the SZ's fade bias was certainly not helping.

So I picked up a new F8 Tour Length driver and immediately started hitting it straighter, with baby draws (hmm ... draw biased driver, go figure). Fabulous -- except distance and roll out are showing as lower on the SkyTrak because my spin (even with a Hzrdus Black 6.0 shat) is more like mid-high 2000s and can climb over 3000. So while the head is helping me with accuracy and ball flight -- the spin climbs up.

Any suggestions for a average joe swing to help me get the spin of my SubZero transferred over to the F8? I ideally I want to get it closer to 2100 or less.

Tempo is smooth, I have a pretty late release. My natural ball flight with irons and hybrids is a draw. Miss on driver is a push fade (with the Sub Zero) or pull hook. The F8 does not seem to fade.

Thanks!

Oban revenge is low spin, high launch, soft butt ,tip which is great for smooth tempo and relatively inexpensive I think msrp 250

The biggest difference is the head i am quite certain. The SZ is a very low spin head, and the F8 while a great head is setup to be higher spin. The F8+ is their low spin version depending on weight placement. Check out Trackmans optimal distance chart. For a SS in the high 90's you do need some spin to keep the ball in the air vs. the high SS that can do it with raw power. At 100 MPH SS, the optimal spin in between 2500-3000 with angle of attack between 0-+5 (hitting up on the ball).

Are you experiencing loss of distance on the course?

100% agree that the head is the reason for the higher spin (moving from SZ to F8). That said, the draw bias on the F8 is basically taking the miss right almost out of play for me. Maybe I am paying too much attention to my SkyTrak's prediction, but the increased spin is killing roll out. To be honest, I have not taking the club on the course yet -- not any good weather days since I got it.

I will stick with the shaft(s) I have and see how the play on course.

I believe the shaft has little to do with the shape of the shot.

I'm guessing you have a similar issue to me - one I've had pretty much my whole life. As much as I try, my driver swing is from slightly outside-in to straight down the line seemingly no matter how much I try to come from the inside to draw the ball.

I had the same SZ you have and had the same problem. "Best" I could do was straight, almost no chance at drawing the ball.

Your "Tour Length" F8 is the same as the regular F8 (NOT the +). It has a weight on the heel to accentuate a draw or tame a slice/fade. It may also be slightly more upright to encourage a draw as well (not sure). It is probably a degree or 2 closed as well.

So if you're hitting the ball basically straight, or even ever so slightly outside-in the club head, will provide the "draw" effect that you can't with your swing.

As for the shaft, look to try spin killers. The Hzrdus Yellow you speak of is one of them so you may already have the right shaft. I play the Hzrdus Black with my Fusion (similar to your F8, it is max forgiving and draw biased) and it works great. Straight to slight draws all day with the occasional slight push that starts a bit right BUT stays right there - no slice/fade.

Oban Devotion is an older shaft but also a spin killer. Tour AD BB also.

And/or try the F8+. Like the SZ though it doesn't have the draw attributes of the regular one but it is a lower spinning head, even with the heavier weight towards the back.

Bon chance.

Well the Tour Length is a shorter driver with more weight in the head so it SW correctly -- but yes, it is an the F8 head (which I want as the F8+ is not only fade biased but also smaller).

I am definately able to draw the ball better now. I do not actually outside-in my driver swing (except on mishits and when I put the ball too far forward). On a good strike the ball will push 2-4* and then draw back with the F8 (whereas the SZ would go straight or often go more right). To keep the SZ in play -- I had to position the ball more forward and hit a pull-fade, which was very inconsistent.

I am not expecting the shaft to alter ball flight -- only to address some of the spin(perhaps only a few hundred RPM). But if my optimal is 2500 to 3000 -- the Hzrdus Black and Yellow are both delivering that. I also picked up an Atmos Black 6S -- which seems to deliver it as well (with slightly more ball speed +2 mph).
