$235 for Camelback Ambiente

is this the worst value in America?

 

Zero memorable holes, 3 drivable par 4s (including 2 back to back), no variety in terrain, landscape, or elevation....man, what a disappointment.

Yeah, that course is definitely not worth $235. I don’t think worse value in America, or even Arizona, but still taking advantage of the high tourist season.

I think Ambiente is a solid course and I enjoy it each time I play there....However, there aren't any courses in AZ that are worth over $200 unless you are talking about getting a tee time at an upscale private club then maybe. If you think Ambiente is bad, Troon and TPC charge even more and I think Boulders does as well or its right around the same. The max for any of these courses should be around $150 but then again people do pay the high rates so I can't fault them for charging more.

It's just been a crazy year for greens fees so far, I guess courses are fully booked or close to because this is the highest I have seen greens fees in the last 10 years or so. Need a good market/housing crash to bring prices down again :cheesy: :cheesy: :cheesy: . Also related screw AZ and the lack of resident rates on the upper end courses

I think Ambiente is a top 5 public track in the area - good variety of holes, variety of options on how to play the holes, can play links like though not a true links course, nice Paradise Valley setting with Camelback in the background and with very high end housing which doesn't intrude on the course, and usually good to very good conditions.

 

Conversely I agree it's not worth $235 - like others, I don't think any public course is. I did recently play it for $125 and thought that was decent given the market. What I think is odd about Ambiente is that they want to charge $235, and they haven't budged on that except the occasional Hot Deal, but it seems like they rarely have a full tee sheet, and usually have a ton of tee times open.

Wildly generous statement that, if somehow true, serves as nothing more than a firm indictment on the quality of public tracks in the area. Went on the Shitbox Delight Tour earlier in the week - Apache Creek, Desert Canyon, et al - and I'd place Ambiente comfortably at the bottom of the list.

 

After the round, it came to me that somewhere in the middle of his riotously self-serving, relentlessly dull soliloquy on the indubitably rich 3-year history of the new layout, the starter mentioned that the redesign was undertaken by the same guy who put Erin Hills together.

 

And then it all clicked. Monotony's Czar. The Duke of Dud. Indeed a Wizard of the Snoozefest.....yeah, too lazy to google his name. Certainly came as no surprise, though.

I don't understand how you can put Ambiente in the category of Desert Canyon or Apache Creek. Ambiente is a solid course that is totally different than anything else in the valley aside from Southern Dunes. It's always in good shape at worst and has some really good risk/reward holes. Granted it's mostly flat, however, the land in that area is flat as it's a wash and anything else would feel contrived. Not sure it's in my top 5 but if not it's number 6. It's certainly a far cry from Indian Bend and a vast improvement.

I can’t even remotely agree that it is top 5 in the Valley. Seriously, it isn’t even close in my book. There are at least 3 munis better IMO. That said, it also isn’t in the same class as Apache Creek either. It is fine, an above average course. Probably in the top 25 in the Valley. Nothing more but not bad either. Likely in the top 50-60 courses in the state.

 

It occurs to me that I sated this very definitively. As I like to always say there is no such thing as right or wrong on these types of opinions. The above is my opinion obviously. Steve and others opinions about it being top 5/10 are reasonable as well. I struggle with an opinion that puts it in the same class as Desert Canyon or Apache creek however. :lol:
