Torrey Pines

I am playing Torrey Pines North on May 7th. I see on the website that the North course will be closed May 8&9 for spring maintenance aerification. Does anyone have an idea what the condition of the course may be since I am playing the day before they close for maintenance. I see reviews of over seeding and it's not that great of conditions. Thanks!

The conditions were fine. Things seem drier than normal so plenty of roll out.

Just played it yesterday and the greens are the firmest I’ve ever played. Lots of rollout so just take a club less on approach shots. That being said they were also incredibly smooth and fantastic to putt on. I didn’t have a single putt hit a bump or bounce all day; very true and pure. I showed up at 7:05 and got out at 7:38 on the north. Really wanted to play the south but they just aerated. The north is a decent course and has some nice views. Easy walk too.

I was supposed to play the South next Friday but concerned now with the aeration. How did they look yesterday? I mean it’ll be another week before I’m there, however I really don’t want to pay $250 to play bumpy greens since I’m sure they don’t give an “aeration rate” lol. Might just be better off playing the North or the club at my hotel, Grand Club at Grand Del Mar. Any thoughts guys??

i didn’t play the south, only the north, which won’t be aerated until May. One of the putting greens was aerated and it wasn’t horrible. A little sandy and some bumps, but you might be ok in another week. I would have been ok paying the twilight rate but it didn’t fit into our schedule so just went with the north.

That’s exactly what I was thinking, and I can play in the PM since I’m stuck in a meeting til 12:30 that day anyway. Think it’d be tough as a single to try to get a spot after 2:30?

I played the Grand earlier in the week and the conditions were good except the bunkers (not a lot of sand).

Is the south actually a better course or is it just more popular because it's the one the tour plays? Are there any big differences between the 2?

So I know they actually play the first and second rounds of the Farmers at both but the weekend and the majors have only been played on the South. I’m guessing that’s why it’s the more popular and more expensive. Much like Bethpage which has I think 5 courses but the Black being the famous one people sleep in their cars for.

The pros playing there is a big draw. The South course is much longer than the North. When they are preparing for the Farmers Insurance, the rough is much longer this tougher. In terms of the views, I would say they are comparable.

How is the pace of play on the North Course? I'm hoping to play a weekday twilight round in early May around 3pm. Will I be able to finish?

The weekdays should flow but weekends are a grind at times. Please check the calendar since the North should be punched some time in May.

We’ve got a 3:10 on the South for this Friday. Do you think there’s a chance or more likely just 15 or so holes??

It's probably going to be tough to get a full round in since the sun sets a little before 730

I played a few sundays ago and went off at 3 on the north. The pace was miserable on the front so we ended up throwing in the towel after 12. Could have made it 3 more holes before dark.

If the pace is quick enough, then you should be able to get 15-18 in. South typically plays quicker in my experience.

I did notice that the tee times for the north currently are every 8 minutes, and 10 for the south so clearly they’re putting more on the north course right now. Wonder if that added to your extra long round.

off topic but are there locker room/shower facilities there; i would assume? am due to play there after SDCC but would have checked out of my hotel by then

The Lodge is connected but don't know if they have a separate gym facility that you can use if you're only playing golf; it's probably worth asking the front desk. There are no locker rooms connected to the golf course; only general bathrooms.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
