Hoganistas Help?

TimV

Recommended Posts

I picked up a set of Hogan Magnums for $2 a club. I am going to be griping them today. They appear to be in good shape after clean-up. Interested in any information on these and what kind of quality they are. They appear to be very playable and should be high launching with the narrow top line and deep cavity and radius looking sole. I can post pics latter if needed. All information and thoughts appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

Pretty well every manufacturer has produced irons pitched at different levels and markets, you already have an example in the Mizuno Cimarrons which were second tier below their Tour Proven range and aimed more at the casual golfer and the same could be said of the Radials and Magnum irons produced by the Hogan company.

A cast head aimed at the GI market.

Well if they feel and perform like my Cimarrons then they should be some really sweet clubs!

The Magnums are definitely a GI cast club without doubt and I don't question that they are not a 1st Line performer but anyone lumping the 84/85 Mizuno Cimarrons in with that hasn't ever hit them. Unless you are confusing the beautiful forged blades I have to the cast CB travesty they produced latter and besmirched the name with? I have to believe that is the case.

I used to sell Mizuno equipment Tim so I have a pretty good idea of what the pecking order was at that time,I can categorically state that Cimarrons were NOT considered premier clubs.

Consider this;have you ever seen the matching woods to go with your irons?

You can find pictures on the web and a good look will tell you exactly where they fall, cast heads with imitation face inserts, soleplates and screws NOT well finished persimmons which are what matched up with the forged Tour Proven irons.

Hogan made a similar club in the Hogan Radial irons, similarly they were not on the same level as the Apex range.

"the cast CB travesty they produced latter and besmirched the name with"

Isn't that how many members see the Magnums?

That aside, I think any self-respecting classics player would take them at $2 per, if only to pull the shafts.

Well I don't know but that was what I was asking. Is that the general consensus then on the Magnums?

I do have them regriped now so I will take them out for a range session at least before selling them.

Tim: they might not be the most sought after model of Hogan but I'll bet they play easy. Guys turn up their noses at the Radials too but I'm not going to sell mine cuz they feel so great! Lol

I haven't tried the Magnum irons but I do have the laminated driver that goes with them. The regular shaft is little soft for me but the club feels, looks, and and plays very nice.

Vintage blades are so awesome, but they can be a handful for the average golfer and can be frustrating to play every day. Definitely try out the Magnums. I'll bet you have fun.

Hey Tim - yes, my impression is that's the conventional wisdom on the Magnums. So the question is, how conventional are you? Myself, I've never been entirely sure whether "Hoganista" is a play on Zapatista or fashionista. ;)

FWIW, cast heads of that era were often considered hard feeling, and difficult to adjust, compared to forged blades. Still, the technology caught on, as the playability advantages were thought by enough buyers to outweigh the disadvantages. Even so, later castings have tended to use various tweaks to deaden vibration somewhat and improve the feel. Classic Pings are maybe the exception in that their heat treatment is claimed to improve both the bendability and the feel - and I'd tend to agree based on my experience of Eye 2s. IIRC, the Magnums were thought good enough to spawn clones.

Obviously not too Conventional since I love those cheap crappy Mizuno Cimarron blades of mine. ;)
