high ball flight

Hello everyone. I am a decent single figure handicap golfer but have a problem for a long time of hitting the ball to high. The problem is managable with the longer clubs but i have poor poor distance and control with the shorter irons as my shots seem to go into the stratusphere with little penetration. i can hit a full sw and it will only go around 60 yards yet i can hit driver around 260 yards. having watched video of my swing on my mobile i seem to get into all the correct postions until i come into the lower part of my downswing. I have attached i photo of what seems to be an unusual position in downswing compared to classic swings . Is this what is causing the high ball flight ? and has anyone got any idas what i am doing wrong as like i say the top of my backswing seems to be really good.

bts - the OP is looking for advice, not a reply which has nothing to do with the thread and without it being helpful.

Jimmy - to me it seems like you have started to release your hands, which is possibly causing your high not so penetrating ball flight. I think you body position is good, but the casting(that is what it appears to me) could be the culprit. A drill I would do are punch shots. Why, it keeps my hands ahead of the ball at impact, keeping the ball flight down, once you get the feel, I would then go with a longer swing.

Just my opinion.

100% no doubt you are casting, and I am also surprised you are a single digit handicapper. At that point in the swing you should have close to a 90* - 100* angle between your arms and clubshaft. From that picture you have close to 180*. You need to keep your hands in front of the ball at impact to lower your flight. Slicefixer has a drill that he calls the 9 - 3 o'clock drill. Basically the above poster was right, it is just punch shots. Swing back to 9 oclock - about 3/4 swing or less, and feel your right hand cup back and your left wrist hinge while staying flat. At the top of the 9 oclock swing - hold that feeling (the set) in the wrists. From there try to hit a punch shot with YOUR BODY, do not flip your wrist or loose the feeling of that set. Just rotate while holding those angles and you should get the feeling of keeping your hands in front of the ball. (some think of shaft lien at impact - it should be liening forward) It will probably feel wierd. Do this with a 7 iron and after some buckets you should start to get the feeling.

Hope ths helps...

Im actually six handicap. guess my short game must be good. thanks for your advice guys. I tried staying behing the ball more on my downswing and definately getting into a better position in my downswing but still dont create anything like the angle shown in the tiger woods pic. Will try some of the drills you have advised.

Tiger's lag or any of the pro's lags, has a good deal to do with practice and flexibility. What I started doing when going to the range is first starting out with 7i punch shots, this is to get the feeling of the hands ahead of the club/face, now. But when I was casting or that my ball striking wasnt as good, I would practice nothing but punch shots.

As I look back with playing with an older friend, he would play nothing but punch shots and we kid him about it. Well, now, it's how he got his hands ahead of the club and played the game.

thanks for advice. went and hit a few balls earlier. I hadnt realised before but i make a poor first move in my downswing which immediately reduces my wrist angle which creates lag. The punch shot drill feels really weird but when i hit a one well i make better contact and take a divot which i didint usually do before. I having been trying to to pull my hands down as the first movement on the downswing which maintains the angle of my wrists on way down. The new downswing is going to take some getting used to but long winter ahead and only way im going to get better.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
